I am just curious. I re-watched the military parade of 2009 and notice that the Chinese Armed Police was holding not a rifle, but the magazine is huge. Was that a shotgun?

It's the Type 97-2 shotgun, feed from magazine instead of the tube. Mechanically, Type 97 is simply Chinese copy of the Remington 870.

Well i just happened to find this topic and i think it will be much better to ask my doubt here rather than opening a new one.

I dont understand very good the *characteristics* of a missile warhead (*dont know if this is the right word in english but im meaning how do they work and what is the purpose of each type). For example, anti-ship missiles like exocet, gabriel, 3m24 uran... have a warhead of 165,150,145kg while anti-missile/anti-aircraft missiles like S-300 (SA-N-20) and Standard Missile 2 have warheads of 143kg and 115kg (all the data is from Jane´s Naval Weapon Systems and several other sources).

Now, two questions:

1) Why does the S-300 missile have such a heavy warhead when its not intended to attack land or ships? Is it because the bigger is the explosion the more chances it has to destroy a missile/plane without hitting it?

2) I know the Standard Missile has been used as light anti-ship missile, but why no one seems to consider the anti-ship capability of SAM missiles? Todays ships have from 8 to 16 anti-ships missiles. It has to be really hard to hit another one with VLS launcher and dozens of SAM missiles to counter the attack. If the attacker uses the VLS to carry a hundred SM-2 i think it would be much more powerfull than carrying 8 exocet (even the warheads are close 115vs165).

As i said before, i dont know much about how warheads work, but i ask to learn from the wise :p

Thanks solarz..but in reading the article I found it looks as though thay can only visit their families once a year for a month..I could not imagine that having served for 20 years and 15 of which I was married...Does anyone know if military dependents have any privileges similar to the US military? You know exchange, medical, dental, commissary MWR..etc..

Happy to help out (with folk lores only though, nothing official).

Conscripts (don't be fooled by the word, Chinese teens bribe the recruiting officers to "get conscripted") took 2 years service across PLA, PLAN, PLAAF and 2nd Arti, during which:

1. You are not allowed to date local girls (or guys, if you are girl) where you posted. Discipline charge against you if otherwise.

2. Hell no you can "get married" with the local girl (or guy) you dated during service. Court-martial against you if otherwise. (Note: "get" married as of wedding; if you are married (status) before you are conscripted, it's not PLA's concern, see remark)

3. It is OK for you to have girlfriend or boyfrind back where-ever you coming from, as long as she or he stays there, you stays here where you posted. If by their own will, your girlfreind / boyfrind moved to the place where you posted, they became "local". Discipline charge against you. (That's IF the officers found out...)

4. NO "Military dependents privileges" for Conscripts.

Remark:

1. I keeps using the word "Conscripts" to differentiate from Professional Military personnel.

2. PLA "conscript" the 17, 18 teens most of time, it is only legal to get married above age 21 for guys and 20 for women.

For professional military personnels including officers and sigend-on-NCOs:

1. Dating is not a concern, as long as foreigners are not invloved.

2. Marrying (the wedding) is not a concern, as long as foreigners are not invloved.

3. Rigorous security-check (including anything you can or can not imaging) would be posed on you if you married to foreigner while active duty. (Considering it used to be totally forbidden, the standard actually loosed)

4. Case by case, military dependent get certain privileges ranging from housing (or housing allowence) to spouse guaranteed to get a fine job in the proximity. Stuff like medical coverage is guaranteed but the % of reimbursement of medical bill is case by case. (You can go to hospitals which military personnels have priorities, but you need to pay the % of bills case by case)

What I missed? Oh, of course despite Conscripts or professionals, pension would be granted if "unhealthy things" happens to you while active duty - case by case, according certain award and pension standard.

this unknown aircraft was seen in "wuhan" "CV" it show canted vertical fin, but I also notice 2 horizontal fin.it is not J-20,but not J-15 either, since J-20 has no horizontal tail fin, while J-15/J-11 has 'straight" tail fin.

Re: Can ID this plane?

Looks like a flanker variant except for the canted tails but that may be an optical illusion. The darn tarp is in the way. No way you can tell for sure.

I believe it's the same mock-up that's been there. It looks the same as before they took off the tarps and no one knew for sure.

Re: Can ID this plane?

It's probably just a J-15, can't imagine it can be anything else.
