I have a question for the PLAN fans..Whenever I see photos of the PLAN CIC or any operators of computer based systems such as radar, sonar, fire control or plotting the sailors assigned appear to be officers..

Soooo a Question..Why does the PLAN have officers doing jobs assigned to enlisted men in other navies? Such as sonar tech, radar techs, plotting etc??? Any one have an answer??

Whoa, I just noticed this thread. This thread shall be my new home aside from Golly's ID thread.

To get things started:

RWRs have been around for a while, but is there any system to warn against the launch of an IR missile on any aircraft currently serving in any military? -- you know, infrared homing being passive and all...

Popeye, I think (very remotely) that in former times in the SU, and therefore probably partly in the PLA in those times, enlisted personall would only serve for a rather short period of time (in comparisson with other armed forces). Therefore it was not worth to train them (time wise). And they weren't trusted to operate technically advanced systems. It's probably changing only slowly.
But I'm really not sure on that.

Panzerkom, the missile approach warners of an airplane that can detect the exhaust plume of the hostile IR missile. Or an MMW radar based missile warning system that sees the missile coming. Other that that, none that I know of.

i know the technology is there, but are any of these systems operational?

Optical systems are quiet common. Using either the UV spectrum to look for the distict exhaust plume of a missile, or IR systems to see the heat of the missile, again, most noticably the exhaust gases. Maybe even a combo. Those systems are on a number of airplanes. (You might have noticed that sometimes the MAWS in the J-11B was debated in the "China Flanker thread")
The active radar MAW is used in the Eurofighter for example. Though I haven't found any new reports on it lately.
Those systems all have their (dis)advantages, being themselves active / passive and so on. The EF MAW was to replaced by an IR system (PIMAWS) later in tranche 3 maybe. But I'm not sure if it will ever materialize.

On a side note. There are directed infra red countermeassures. Thats an IR laser that will dazzle an IR missile seeker by sending laser pulses at it. The USAF will mount those on C-17, CV-22, CH-53 for example. There was also talk of a microwave version, that'll barbecue radar missile seekers.

Thanks Scratch. It just looks odd to me seeing all those officers operating equipment that enlisted men operate in other navies.
