I know Taiwan is not a "Cash cow' to the US. Tiawan is not the only customer as you point out. US military equipment is sold woldwide. As to what the price is ..it is anyones best guess. I sure don't know. The Us would never sell the ROC say a Arliegh Burke class DDG for fear it's technology may fall into PLA hands. Or any other country for that matter.
Taiwan is not a cash cow, but since it can only import stuff from US, so US can take advantage of that like what the Russians do with Chinese.

All politicians are childish. Is this exercise really gonna make China think twice? More like advance China's military capabilities to counter. Given President Chen's history, I wouldn't put it past him that this is all about diverting attention away from his corruption scandals.

Just some comments on utelore's thread:
820 missiles aimed at Taiwan, did china published this number? I think the number of missiles aiming to Taiwan is top secret of China. If Chen said it, that means he was telling china, we have spies in you.

China knows Taiwan has spies in China, just as Taiwan knows China has spies in Taiwan. The fact China has hundreds of missiles ready to attack Taiwan is one of Beijing's worst kept secrets, even though comments refering to them are often removed from mainland sites.

Does China's military exercises, such as those simulating taking an island, make Taiwan change its policies? Not really. Some would say it just helps the Pan Greens.

If military exercises over the Taiwan issue are a bad idea, they're a bad idea regardless who is conducting them.

M-60s fire in a highly unrealistic manner at targets out to sea:

Harpoon fired from a Chi Yang (Knox) class FFG. I also saw a Hsiung Feng I (Gabriel II clone) being fired on the BBC TV footage.

The only difference here in regards to military exercises is that you hear Taiwan and the US complain when China conducts exercises.

A pro-China Taiwanese president would greatly increase the chances of peaceful unification between Taiwan and China, which would basically let China get a hold of F-16s (albeit earlier Block), Various advanced cruisers, Patriot missiles systems, and what not. Even if it is downgraded compared to current US inventory frontline fighters, it would be a major "inconvenience" for the US if China was able to closely examine them.

In fact, something worth mentioning about this exercise is that Taiwan agreed not to fire the AMRAAM because of US pressure... it's a little paranoid, but understandable, I guess. (Even if the chances of China learning anything from an AIM-120 launch are minimal)

Edit : Added picture

Interesting picture from the psychological warfare exercise.

Basically it says (in simplified Chinese, so I assume it would be directed at PLA troopers) Put down your weapons > Take off your helmets > Raise your hands.

Surrender to the Republic of China
We will ensure your safety

Nope..because the equipment they have is not 100% the same as the US equipment. And has a more limited capablity...As for what will happen to the equipment well the PLA would keep it and study it of course...But let us hope that war never comes. as we can see on Tv everyday war just absouletly sucks....:(

your right, war sucks :(

I honestly don't think these recent contacts really change the perception of the PRC. I'm sure the PLA never underestimated the US military in the first place. Seeing all this gear in person doesn't reveal anything they don't already know. If anything, they'll see whether or not the US Navy in practice is as great as they are on paper or in theory. I do think PLA planners assume in any conflict contingency that the US will bring as many assets to bear as possible, they don't simply assume the US will pull their punches. So all these grand exercises simply confirm the PLA's beliefs, they're no surprise at all.

I think you're right about PRC perceptions. But I also know that the USN did not invite China's military to show anything new or unknown. I think the exercise intended to be a friendly gesture, and it was also just a reminder that the USN can bring alot of destruction if needed. I'm sure the USN Admirals running it mentioned that this is just a fraction of what the USN can bring to the table.

I also believe that Taiwan's intention is to show that it is no pushover with their own exercise. It looks to me like they sent a message to the mainland that they intend to fight hard and brutal if they need to to defend themselves.

IMO, there is nothing to be proud of showing all this old American-made war fighting machines with "limited capability" to the PLA ! I remember few decades ago, KMT with superior numbers and high-tech hardwares (American-made of course) could not win the war with the ill-equipped Red Army and do you think they can do it now with the well-equipped PLA ??? Insult removed

Yeah, and then come the usual answer, US will intervene....!!! I always wonder why Taiwanese prefer to give all this stupid billions of dollars to US for protection instead of choosing peaceful re-unification and then the money can be used for the benefits of Taiwanese people ??? I don't think anybody would dare to attack Taiwan once it's unified with China !

I remembered sometimes ago I had read somewhere that chinese people used to call Americans "paper tiger", could somebody explain the meaning of this phrase ? Why USA is afraid of selling AB DDGs to Taiwan but not to Japan and S.Korea ? I think USA usually like to give their best weapons to close allies to defend themselves fr enemies ? Is Taiwan an exception ? How on earth these high-tech weapons can fall into PLA's hands if USA with their mighty power really want to defend Taiwan fr invasion ???

Reminder to all..Most political comments, country bashing and insults are forbidden in this forum
