I think the LCS was originally designed with and expected to operate best in conjunction with the Zumwalt destroyers(?)

Here is a GREAT picture of the two LCS designs operating together. The Freedom Class, USS Freedom, LCS-1 is in the background, and the Independence Class, USS Independence, LCS-2 is in the foreground.

The principal purpose of the LCS is to operate independently, or in groups in the littorals.

If they are accompanying an ARG in preparing for an Amphibious or air assault opertion, it is very possible that they will operate in conjunction with a Zumwalt. But that is not their principle mission.

There will only be three Zumwalts and there are going to end up being perhaps over 50 LCS. So clearly, they will, at least on average, rarely operate with the Zumwalts.

MBDA’S BRIMSTONE Simultaneously Destroys Multiple Attack Craft In Salvo Firing

MBDA’s combat proven, UK developed, Brimstone missile carried out the world’s first surface to surface salvo engagement of multiple Fast In-shore Attack Craft (FIAC) threats with a single button push. The success of the trial has shown Brimstone’s unrivalled ability to swiftly strike numerous individual vessels without the need to laboriously designate each target, thereby demonstrating its prowess as a fire and forget maritime surface attack weapon.

That is an awesome video. It has a range of about 8 miles is my understanding and so would be very effective against swarming speedboats. I hope Raytheon works with MBDA to integrate that capability onto the LCS.

My big concern for the LCS is its ability to engage 3-4 small corvettes at 30-50 mile ranges who are armed with missiles of their own with that range. The LCS still need a longer range SSM IMHO.

Lockheed Martin has joined the party with a proposal of their own, with video:

Four Freedom class LCS are now under construction at Marinette Marine by Lockheed Martin. The USS Milwaukee, LCS-5 will be launched this year. The USS Detroit, LCS-7, will be launched next year, along with USS Little Rock, LCS-9.

And that is the Freedom Class. There are three Independence Class vessels being constructed now at Austral in Mobile, Alabama. LCS-4, USS Jackson should be launched in 2014, with LCS-8, USS Montgomery following in late 2014 or early 2015.

So, by the end of 2014, there should at least be the following vessels in the water:

LCS-1 USS Freedom
LCS-2 USS Independence
LCS-3 USS Ft. Worth
LCS-4 USS Coronado
LCS-5 USS Milwaukee
LCS-6 USS Jackson
LCS-7 USS Detroit
LCS-8 USS Montgomery
