Apart from the possibility of being an old image, it is also possible it is a recent image, but of one of the earlier prototypes which would still be expected to be doing flight testing and would be expected to retain its pitot tube as well.

Overall the key point imo is that it's not surprising at all. In fact as a picture, there actually isn't much that is interesting or worth registering at all.

Hmm? In fact I see it a bit differently! To spot still now a pitot on an aircraft that „should“ be quite close to the end of the flight test phase (or at leats no longer in the early phase) I think it is indeed surprising.

Otherwise I agree, nether the image not the pitot reveals anything interesting.

Earlier KJ-600 prototypes are the ones that would have been built as having pitot tubes -- they are likely to be still doing general flight testing duties even at this stage of development.
IMO it is quite expected that they would retain their pitot tubes.

Are we sure that KJ600 uses WJ-6C turboprop instead of allegedly the AEP500 in the prototypes currently under testing?
The engine in the photo in post #914 does not look like WJ-6C. WJ-6 on Y-8 looks like this.

The engine cowling is a straight circular tube with a small air intake under.

AEP-500 or maybe WJ-10 (military designation?) looks like this

It has an offset reduction gear box. This would make the cowling much longer vertically even considerring the landing gear. This matches all the available photos we have so far. Maybe WJ-6C was used at some early point of time to test the flying characteristic of the airframe, but what we have seen so far indicates a very different engine than WJ-6C.

认真看k线: 看来600也要去辽宁山东
萌虎鲸: 已经飞过了...
认真看k线: Looks like (KJ-)600 will be going onboard Liaoning and Shandong as well
Cute Orca: Already flown... (???!!!)

Coupled with the previous mention on the possibility of the J-35 serving onboard the two STOBARS, perhaps these aren't exactly just artist imagination...

Time to replace those Z-18J AWACS helicopters...
