KJ-600 carrierborne AEWC thread & possible KY-600 (?) COD aircraft

J15s would not be able to ariel refuel as well as a tanker variant of KJ600. And there is currently no MQ28 equivalent.

Though I do think an ASW variant would be of great use. I also think ariel refueling is super important otherwise why would US Navy create a MQ28?
A more offensive fleet will have a higher need for tankers. The Chinese Navy has just obtained their first CATOBAR aircraft carrier, and the demand for equipping it with an advanced trainer aircraft is even higher. So we can expect a similar tanker, but we won't see it flying on the Fujian anytime soon.

interesting... you are saying tanker variants would only be useful for offensive fleets.

I think the demand for air tankers is a consequence of just wanting a more capable fleet...

The Chinese Carrier program is never to be under estimated

but if indeed the KY-600 COD variant is under development its one more indication that China is not doing a half job with its Carrier program

one of the main jobs for COD is transfer failed and new jet engines to and from Carriers, this means China is gearing up for such a development showing Global ambition

They would have needed a COD variant sooner or later as a consequence of having an air fleet out at sea that needs fresh parts once in a while.... not to mention the amount of sailors...

Also, fighter pilots (especially carrier-based ones) rarely, if ever gets refueled mid-air while running on fumes - They are trained to specifically avoid such situations unless exceptional circumstances.
As an aside, I think one possible exception to this is if there is any way in hell the KJ-600 could launch off the 001/002's waist launch position on fumes and high WOD speeds. I think in that specific case the PLAN would widen/add the waist position wheel blocks to accommodate the KJ-600 and allow it to fly off the deck on fumes to immediately get topped up in flight. IMO the dramatically more effective AEW&C capability that the KJ-600 provides over the Z-18J is worthwhile for the PLAN to add to the 001/002, if physics allows.

Launching per se probably can be done.
Big problem is engine out during take off...
