Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

I guess that diamond shape means this aircraft will have DAS if the J-20 has it.

Not sure about that. We don't actually know where the J-20's DAS windows will be.
Does anyone know where the F-35's DAS windows are, if they're visible at all?

yeah they seem to pass DAS out like candies these days on the chinese built airplanes...

pretty soon a crop duster would have a DAS...

Really? All I know is that J-20 might have a similar system. JF-17, J-11B and J-10B have MAWS facing rearwards... but I don't think any chinese aircraft has a passive detection system as comprehensive as the F-35's DAS?

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

I agree. maybe call it "Fighters Beyond J-20"? So other SAC and CAC projects and the like can be posted there too?

This thread is getting interesting, and can be something we pay attention to while the J-20 thread isn't moving along. I wonder what kinda missions this plane will go, and how advanced it will be. What's the most advanced striker/attack aircraft out there excluding F-35? And I also don't think this aircraft is 5th gen, but probably 4.5++ or something. PLAAF's aircraft fleet will really soon be no.2, leaving everyone else in the dust. Of course that's to say if the J-20 and this prototype all go into service, leading to the PLAAF to comprise of J-20,J-11A/B,J-10, JH-XX,JH-7? all for combat aircrafts. Maybe even possible this aircraft is to replace the Q-9?

Q-9?

I think it's way early to be speculating about the kind of missions this aircraft will undertake. But if it is real, and from the picture of the forward fuselage, I think the chances of it being a full 5th generation aircraft with internal weapon bays is higher than that of without, simply from the stealth shaping and care on the panels and DSI intake.
If it is as large as the JH-7 (~22m) and has internal weapon bays, I imagine it would act as a deep penetrator while flying fast and high. I don't think it will have much use in anti shipping, as its weapon bays are probably too small to carry AShMs internally. Another large stealthy aircraft would be very useful for the PLAAF, again as ECM, recon etc.

But let's wait for more photos. I'm expecially interested in the overall size of the aircraft and whether it has provision for weapon bays.

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

is there any chance at all that what what we are seeing is just a twin-seat J-20?

Not impossible, but based on the look of the DSI and how there doesn't seem to be indication of a canard in the J-20's position I would doubt that idea.
More importantly we aren't hearing any talk from the BBS about a J-20 twin seater as of yet. If it was a J-20 twin seater it'd be all over their boards, I'd imagine.

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

The DSI is clearly different from that on the J-20. Besides, why would the J-20 abandon the one piece canopy for the two seater?

Maybe it's overly difficult to make a suitable one piece canopy strong but big enough?
