It's a shame the JH-7 got replaced by flankers in the fighter-bomber role. Would have loved to see further development of this beautiful indigenous plane
JH-7 can still use some munitions (YJ-12) that J-16 cannot. As such, it is still useful for anti-shipping missions roles. Furthermore, as J-16 is essentially a 'do-everything' plane (i.e. air superiority / ground attack / long range interceptor), JH-7 can cover ground attack roles to free up J-16s for dealing with enemy aircraft.

So it is not replaced by Flankers, however it will eventually be replaced by a new aircraft w/ similar roles such as JH-XX

As an aside, (and apologies if it has been discussed before), does anyone know of JH-7 A2A capabilities? I know it can use long range PL-21 (or -20/-17/XX) and some SRAAMs, but has it ever been seen with PL-12?

The YJ-12 cannot be used ... at least we have't seen ever that monster missile under any JH-7A

Ah okay then I was wrong then, thanks for correction. I was under the impression that current JH-7s (including JH-7A and improved versions of it) can carry YJ-12s. In fact, only the proposed (and possibly abandoned) JH-7B was speculated to be capable of lugging YJ-12s (according to

Laser guided bomb + laser targeting pod (K/JDC03A). A surprisingly rare sight.

It is definitively no superstition. Because of the nature of the inverse square law loss of power in long distance radio transmissions and the relative low power of the satellite it will be easy for a ground based installation to interfere with the signal. There are GPS jammers sold in the weapons market. And in a peer vs peer conflict the satellite networks would probably be shot down pretty quickly. All three major powers have ASAT weapons of some sort.

It is harder to jam lasers than satellite guided bombs. And lasers will continue working even if someone shoots down the satellite constellation.
(1)Laser is still more accurate - not per se, but because it simply aims at the point of aim. Moreover, point of aim may be easily adjusted.
Satellite bombs are vulnerable to geospatial mistakes(especially in mountainous areas), and don't like elevated targets in general.

(2)Laser munition can be easily made to engage moving targets(vehicles, ships). Even flying targets, if you want to.
With Satellite bombs, it's a nightmare - or, to be exact, difficulty and results aren't too dissimilar from dumb bombs, just costs more.

(3)Laser munitions can easily be thrown somewhere where we know there will be 3rd party laser designation.
Doesn't work with satellite munitions.

Basically, satellite bombs can be understood(tactically) as much better dumb bombs.
Laser munitions, on the other hand, are actually guided.
