Still only one J-10AH regiment and one J-11BH regiment.

I think the Navy liked the JH-7 for the naval strike mission and started buying it, before the Air Force saw the potential of the plane, which had meanwhile become JH-7A. Each service has five JH-7(A) regiments, or brigade in the case of 110 Urumqi.

I rather expect that PLAAF will buy another 7-8 regiments to completely replace Q-5 by 2020.

JH7 is more like a 2nd generation on steroid, 2.5 at the most. Not a true 3rd generation plane.

What does "on steroid" mean? This methaphor doesn't apply to the JH-7A since it has a less powerful engine than the flanker but still has comparable payload range.

I think we really should just stop obsessing with this pointless 'generations' categorization. It's just a publicity stunt definition devised by salesmen to help them sell more airplanes.

The JH7A is a pure striker, it can only realistically do one thing, but it does it very well for a very reasonable price, and that is why both the PLANAF and PLAAF love it.

Number one criteria for 3rd generation jet is super maneuverability, JH7A is just a little better than F111. It's a striker, not a fighter jet.

Irrespective of the generations, fighter bomber jets are built differently from air-superiority jetfighter which focuses more on manoeuvrebility. Fighter-bomber focuses more on payload range and on being an aerodynamically stable platform during weapons launch.

What ?!:p If true , does anyone knows, is it just an upgraded JH-7A (mainly systems) or is it the rumoured stealth replacement/ version ?

Unlikely to be stealth. Just better avionics/range/payloads maybe some half decent AA capability as well.

Unless they magically developed WS9A without anyone noticing I don't think there will be any improvement of range and payload. XAC just settled into a JH7A pulse line last year I doubt they will introducing any radical air frame change this soon.
