Or the Pakistanis are feeling paranoid and insist on a large stockpile for spares/future production.

Pakistanis are going to switch to WS-13 anyways. Chinese are always considered most trustworthy and reliable providers then any other country has ever been. (Based on the 50+ years of history).

If WS-13 will use 70%+ RD-93s parts is another story.

KARACHI, Aug 7 (APP): Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed has said that JF-17 aircraft being manufactured in collaboration with China will be a sound fighter aircraft which in some respects is better than the existing F-16.

Talking to media at a book launching ceremony of ‘PAF Over The Years’, he said about 60 to 70 per cent manufacturing of the aircraft is being undertaken in Pakistan.

The engine is presently coming from Russia but later it will be developed by China, he informed.
Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed said talks are underway with China in connection with the acquisition of AWACS and a high-tech aircraft FC-20. “This mix will reduce our dependence on any single country’s assistance,” he noted.

He said the F-16 aircraft acquired recently as well as the modern weapons would further add to the technological advancement of the Pakistan Air Force.

He said a contract has been signed with USA for acquiring 18 new F-16 aircraft besides weapons and systems of electronic warfare and reconnaissance. This acquisition will be subject to the annual certification by the USA, he added.

Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed said four used F-16 have been received while 10 more such aircraft will arrive during the next year.

On a related note ......

There was talk a few months back of a potential purchase of JF-17's for Azerbaijan. Now assuming this goes through I have query as to how these joint ventures work out

1)As this sale is apparently being pushed by Pakistan would it be done like a car sale where the manufacturer simply delivers the orders?
2)If so is there enough spare production capacity for China to provide the aircraft?
3)Or should we assume that the Pakistanis will provide the production capacity?
4)And how does the proceeds get shared out?

I am curious as I have always wondered what comes first in these situations.Money from sales or aircraft to bolster defence as quickly as possible.

Hmmm, 1,000. I wonder if China really is expecting purchases like that or if they're planning to buy a significant number for themselves.

It could be including other costs or the engine could really just be the most expensive thing on the FC-1.

==As a general rule of thumb, the cost engine(s) is around 20 to 25% of the total production cost of the plane. and I doubt that the airframe and the avionics of JF-17 only costs 2 million dollars.

Whoops spoke too soon:

Russia has frozen China's request to re-export RD-93 engines, used to power JF-17 fighters, to Pakistan after India protested to Russia that China was violating an end-user agreement, The Indian Express reported Aug. 13. Russia's Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov will discuss the matter with India's National Security Adviser MK Narayanan on Aug. 28 during defense talks in Moscow.

^ Yes apparently this August 12 announcement trumped the earlier August 5 announcement saying Russian was going to authorize the RD-93. Obviously, this is a barometer for the Russian-India strategic relationship.

I don't think either of these actions are "final." Russian is waiting on whether India will lean to Russia again for its MCRA fighter bid, before making a final decision.

Apparently Indian express has no credibility in these matters.....

I would wait until a more credible source emerges...

The RD-93 engines cost just short of 3 million dollars each, if I remember, like 2.85 million. Its actually expensive considering the AL-31FN for the J-10s are around 3 million each.
