JAPAN ADVANCES PLAN FOR ANOTHER AIR-CAPABLE ASSAULT SHIP

The Japanese defense ministry has brought forward a proposal to construct at least one large amphibious assault ship that will enlarge the country’s naval aviation capability. The program may also enhance sales prospects for the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, and the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightening II.

Hmmm...then I suppose that this vessel will be in addition the the 2nd Izumo, which is already building.

Larger than the Osumis, and, since they were looking at the Malkin Island, perhaps even larger than the Izumos.

This will mean, once they add it, that Japan will have the following flattops:

Osumi (12-14,000 tons) x 3

osumi5.jpg

Hyuga (20-22,000 tons) x 2

hyuga-01.jpg

Izumo (27-30,000 tons) x 2

izumo-02.jpg

Plus at least one of these new vessels...but I have to believe that the JMSDF will build at least two of them.

That will be nine flattops for Japan.

Japan Just Held A First-Of-Its-Kind Live Fire Exercise On Mount Fuji

In the shadow of rising tensions in the East China Sea, Japan is holding live fire exercise in the foothills of Mount Fuji until Sunday. Japan has held annual military exercises aimed at protecting its northern territories along its maritime frontier with Russia, although present realities have led to Japan shifting its priorities to island defence.

The exercises, called Fire Power, are aimed at defending outlying Japanese islands from a hypothetical invasion. Fire Power is a first-of-its-kind exercise and follows new national defence guidelines.

The exercise included battle tanks, helicopters, and elite soldiers displaying tactics that could be used if Japan needs to defend, or retake, its island territory in the East China Sea. Altogether, the exercise included 2,300 troops, 20 aircraft, and 80 tanks and other armoured vehicles.

Tensions have been steadily increasing in East Asia as China has flexed its muscle, laying claim to places like the Senkaku Islands, which Japan currently views as sovereign territory. The strained relationship between the nations has raised the specter of modern-day great power conflict, and led to direct military competition between Japan and China.

This public display training is held each year for over a decade. It's basically the same as the JMSDF full fleet inspection day.
You'll probably find similar vids on youtube.

I wouldn't put much thought to it.
I believe I heard Mr. Onodera, Minister of Defense, made a comment about wanting an Amphibious assault ship after taking a tour of at San Diego. It's linked to the French Mistral delivery to Russia. France is facing a problem of whether they should deliver the Mistral to Russia which conflict with the present EU embargo against Russia over the Ukraine intervention problem.
Japan is reaching out a helping hand hinting that Japan will consider accepting those ships if France has no choice but to construct them but can't deliver due to the embargo.

Well, one has already been built and paid for, having gone through builder's trials.

Be hard for them not to hand that one over without a huge issue...but I suppose they could give the money back.

The second will launch this fall...a good 35-40% of it built in Russia.

The last two are meant to be built in Russia anyway.

The Mistrals themselves were built to more commercial standards, although the Russian versions may be built stronger, I do not know.

Interesting that the JMSDF might take them on.

Here we go,,,,,hope and change! As the cold war heats up, everyone can enjoy the fun, and don't anybody cry about Japan amping up their own military juice! not with all the rah! rah! we hear when the rest of us play with our new toys! Parity ensures the pain will be mutual if somebody misbehaves.

Here is some news with more substance.

Japan looking to buy more stealth fighters in 2015
TOKYO — Japan plans to seek funding to buy six F-35 stealth fighter jets in next year’s budget to strengthen defense of remote southwestern islands against China, which has grown increasingly assertive at sea and in the air, the Nikkei reported.

The Ministry of Defense intends to ask that 124.9 billion yen be set aside, the Nikkei said Wednesday.

Air Self-Defense Force hopes to buy 42 of the aircraft in all to replace its fleet of aging F-4 fighters, the Nikkei said.....to read more

After reading the article more closely I believe JMSDF is proposing a study so they can include a complete deployment plan writing down all requirements to operate a full fledged amphibious assault ship with a fixed wing fighter squadron into the next mid term 5years defense plans which starts from 2020. With this in mind plans to actually constructing it can only start in 2025 at earliest while recruitment, training and procurement of other equipment will be placed from the 2020 mid term plan.

Another interesting article;
Japan considers building its own fighter jets
TOKYO — Japan is considering building its own fighter jets after years of playing second fiddle in a U.S. construction partnership, a report said Thursday, in a move likely to stoke fears of its military resurgence among Asian neighbors.

Japan’s attempt in the 1980s to build its first purely domestic fighters since World War II faced U.S. resistance and resulted in joint U.S.-Japan development and production of the F-2, the Nikkei newspaper said.

But joint F-2 production ended more than two years ago and the last of the fighters are due to be retired from Japan’s air defense force around 2028, it added....to read more

Looks as if JASDF had finally raised their iron claded a$$es to make request for replacements for the aging F-15J fleet.

Maybe JMSDF can increased its air capabilities with a new LHD/CV but can yet increase its submarine Fleet.

JMSDF submarine force

Because Japan buitl 1 SSK by year before for a long time except very few years as 2014 no SSK delivered.

Therefore the fleet of 18 SSK is very young this, SSK have 20 years only. Harushio decommissionned 19/21 years only, Yuushio also.

Actually Japan Submarine force get 18 SSK* which 16 in frontline units and 2 for training, i have see plan for a fleet of 22, with training units ?

By recovering 5 Harushio and last Yushio same age knowing SSK have a like about 30 years... JMSDF can easy increase number of SSK up to 23 and more.

Only problems the number of crew in a country or serve in the armed forces remains a bit special ( WW II etc... ) but seems changed a little and as i say storage conditions.

*Kure : 9 combat SSK and Yokosuka : 7 combat and 2 for training can be use for combat if necessary.

You know google does a good translation.
Anyways it's just speculation since the ship hasn't been built yet.

To reduce cost the VLS positioned in front of the superstructure had been reduced by half with only 16 cells. It is speculated that 4 cells will be armed with quad pack ESSM and the remaining 12 cells armed with 07 type VLA. This ships iwill also be equipped with 68 type tri-pod torpedo launchers armed with type 12 short range torpedo. It is also speculated that 16 more VLS cells is able to be added when required.

Automatic translation of oriental languages is often very imperfect and that is why I asked you for help SamuraiBlue and thanks for it.

If ? 25 DD have one Mk 41 VLS with 16 cells including 12 VL Asroc ( Type 07 ) and 16 ESSM, he have exactly the same number and missiles type as Hyuga.
A high proportion of ASW missiles.

And beside JMSDF ships carry many of these missiles Atago 32 for 96 cells ! Akizuki, Takanami 16/32 and Kongo 16/90 according " Flottes de Combat ".

*Kure : 9 combat SSK and Yokosuka : 7 combat and 2 for training can be use for combat if necessary.
Correction : Training SSK are based to Kure, language problem :)
