SamuraiBlue: Do you know if it's possible to guide Type 90 ASM from Japanese ships (by for example mid-course datalink as in Teseo MK2/A

)?

The type 12 SSM-1B Advanced which is scheduled to come online in 2017 for surface vessels has that function along with extended range and better targeting/guidance but not the older type 90.

Could you please post more details (I used google.co.jp and it seems "something" is available there, but I don't understand it, of course :)

It doesn't give much information really, the land launch type 12 will be the basis in which it is able to;

  • Launch vertically
  • Has better large/small target discriminator
  • Has better target accuracy
  • Has additional GPS intermediate guidance with inertia and active radar homing terminal guidance

You can easily identify the type 12s from the type 88 since the canister for type 12s are square where as type 88 are in round canisters.

In addition JMSDF is planning to add mid-flight data link target up date, additional IR terminal guidance and longer range.

So it will probably be able to be launched from a VLS and if you cut the terminal guidance it can easily be converted into a land attack missile. Pretty scary if you ask me.

There will be no VLS Harpoon. The project has been scrapped. The Anti-surface Tactical Tomahawk which is already US VLS system compatible, has a much longer range, and carries a much larger warhead, will be used instead as a bridge to the LRASM. In fact it may supplant the LRASM, depending on costs, performance, etc.

Tomahawk is a poor choice for anti-ship missile : it is relatively big and slow , and not very maneuverable . It has much less chance of defeating modern CIWS and this is one of the reasons Tomahawk TASM was shelved . Yes , they could be useful against some non-sophisticated opponents , but I guess Harpoon would solider on until LRASM is deployed in sufficient numbers .

"The Joshan and her crew likely received the message, but with the knowledge that two F-4 Phantoms were inbound from the mainland to assist, turned towards the US ships and fired the first of three US-made Harpoon Anti-Ship missiles at the American ships from a distance of 13 miles. The US ships deployed anti-missile chaff and succeeded in diverting the onrushing Harpoons away from them, and the order was passed to the USS Simpson (FFG-56), steaming closest to the attacking Joshan, to open fire

Iranians had first versions of Harpoons for export , and of course Americans knew how to defeat them . But I doubt it was done with chaff , more likely jammers with specific frequencies were used . Of course , all of this would be classified info for some time.

SamuraiBlue: Do you know if the JMSDF is going to get precision-guided munition for naval guns, I mean Excalibur or Vulcano or Strales or LRLAP or home-made or anything?

Not that I am aware of.
Howitzer type weapons have limited usage on a island nation like Japan.
Japan domestic howitzer is the

.
If Japan recognizes the need of those war-head then I believe they will be imported since there will not be in need of large quantity.

== Edit==

Here is something absolutely old school that TRDI is doing research.
It seems that they are doing aerodynamic test by placing an air resistant plate on the tip of a howitzer shell to see if they can change flight characteristics with better accuracy without changing the amount of propellent or change the firing solution of the howitzer.

Samurai got any news on the new Kawasaki chopper?or Aces infantry gear last stuff I have is like two years old.

Are you talking about the UH-X project?
That had been cancelled January this year due to some JGSDF official leaking information of another bidder's information to KHI in exchange for bribes. This led to the cancellation of the project and KHI being suspended from all bids for two months.

SamuraiBlue: I gave you Like not because I like what's happened, of course, but that you told us that type of "activities" had been recently going in Japan, too :-(
