Nice comparison Jeff. Do you know the dimensions of the Hangar deck? Thanks!
The Hyuga Class hanger deck is about 350 feet long by 55 feet wide.

Based on the position of the elevators on the Izumo, I believe that the Izumo Class hanger deck is going to be about 550 feet long by 70 feet wide.

Here's a pic of the Hyuga hanger:

For compare, what size for US CVN and how many aircrafts in ?
A Nimitz class carrier's hanger is the following size:

Length: 684 feet
Width: 108 feet
Height: 25 feet 7 inches

It is divided into three bays by thick steel doors designed to restrict the spread of fire. Aircraft are stored there in rough weather and in order to conduct repairs and maintenance on the aircraft.

After getting some info from a friend in Japan, I have come up with the following drawing for the Hyuga/Izumo comparison that is now on my site:

I just realized something. JS Hyuga & Izumo are both to wide to traverse the Panama Canal. USN LHDs have traveled through the Panama Canal.

The Wasp Class beam is just under 108 feet. Same with the America LHAs. The Hyuga beam is 108 ft and the Izumo beam is 110 feet. Is it "that" close? I would have thought that they both could get through the canal.

Even if they cannot do it now, there is a significant, serveral billion dollar renovation going on to the canal right now to increase the beam to like 160 feet, and increase the length to like 1,400 feet capability.

Also, here's another comparison on how big the new Japanese DDH-183 Izumo is, this time compared to the Hyuga Class and the Nimitz Class.

Again, as you can see, the JS Izumo is a big ship.

Here are some nice, newer, high resolution pictures of the new Japanese Carrier after she was launched and the tugs took her to her dock for further outfitting.

These are from an individual in Japan at the launch who had a very good high-def camera.

As you can tell, the Izumo, DDH-183, is a very nice looking vessel...and will be a real asset and addition to the JMSDF. In 2-3 years, the seocnd carrier, DDH-184, will be luanched.

What is the reason behind have such a large superstructure on the Izumo? Everyone says that the superstructure on Liaoning should be much smaller, seeing that the ones on the Ford is really small. Why don't the LHDs have smaller superstructure?

I am guessing but Izumo-class likely stiil retains a number of systems of a destroyer that means she is going to have a busy island packing all those systems well retaining a flat deck. The Island on the Izumo-class looks a lot like the one from the Hyūga-class too so they might be trying a modular approach .

Aussie Canberra Class is 230m and it's quoted as 27,000 tons full load 30,000+ tons

Same reason Japan said it can carry 5 helos they said its 27,000 tons, clearly both conservative figures, more like 35,000 tons
