Please do not get into the political discussion about Japan, World War II, and Japan as a rising threat because of its modernization and building.

Everyone else in the Western Pacific is doing the same.

We do not allow Sino-Phobia here on SD. We are not going to allow Japanese Phobia either.

Stick to the military technical aspects, specifications, characteristics, strengths or weaknesses of the design...the actual military news. Stay away from Opinion Editorials (OpEds).

Thanks.

Captain
Interesting vids I found about JSDF cadets.

First is a vid about the JSDF Academy(Boeidai[防衛大]) since JSDF is not divided like the US military arms and is governed under a single organization, DoD. There is only one Military Academy for all arms.

I might remind you this is a military academy for officer training and not a boot camp.

Here is another interesting vid.
Naval Aviation CADETS trained at Ozuki Airbase, MSDF Yamaguchi Pref, JAPAN.
These are fresh out of high school and Uni that joined the JMSDF.

That is where future jet fighter pilots will be coming from if Japan actually constructs an full fledged aircraft carrier.
YOu can see how much money Japan is allocating in training cadets to become soldiers.

With the legal changes being implemented to permit Japanese forces to be used beyond purely defensive/reactive operations, I wonder if any exchange officers will start showing up in US units as we see with British and other allies.

Naval Today said:
Several Japanese distinguished visitors visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) for an all-hands call and ship tour, Aug. 24.

Among the visitors were Hiroyasu Izumi, minister plenipotentiary and deputy chief of mission, Embassy of Japan; Rear Adm. Yuri Sekignuchi, defense and naval attaché, Embassy of Japan; Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet; Vice Adm. Michael Shoemaker, commander, Naval Air Forces; Rear Adm. Robert Girrier, deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet; and Michael Reagan, son of President Ronald Reagan and president of the Reagan Legacy Foundation.

More than 1,000 Sailors joined Capt. Chris Bolt, Reagan’s commanding officer, and the distinguished visitors on the ship’s flight deck for an all-hands call. Bolt addressed the crew concerning Reagan’s new role as the U.S. Navy’s only forward deployed aircraft carrier.

Izumi and Bolt spoke with the crew about the longstanding relationship the U.S. Navy has had, and will continue to foster, with Japan. Izumi and dignitaries were also given a tour of Ronald Reagan.

Ronald Reagan recently completed a hull swap with the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) while moored at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. Many former George Washington Sailors joined the Ronald Reagan team and will transit with the ship back to Yokosuka, Japan.

Japan has dispatched some units of the SDF to peace keeping in the past, including Iraq. It was controversial but not unheard of.

Japan Lawyers Join Opposition To Controversial Security Bills
Japan's national bar association on Wednesday threw its weight behind growing opposition to controversial security bills that could pave the way for Japanese troops to engage in combat for the first time since the end of World War II.

Hundreds of demonstrators, including some members of the 36,000-strong Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA), took part in a Tokyo rally with academics and citizens groups calling for the government to scrap the legislation — in the final stages of working its way through parliament.

Under the proposed new rules, pacifist Japan's Self-Defense Forces would have the option of going into battle to protect allies even if there was no direct threat to Japan or its people.

"The constitution couldn't work as a constitution" if the bills took effect, JFBA chairman Susumu Murakoshi told a news conference ahead of the rain-soaked demonstration.

Murakoshi called the swelling number of lawyers and academics opposed to the bills "unprecedented." Lawyers typically avoid taking part in large scale rallies.

The proposed legislation passed through the powerful lower house of parliament last month and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition aims to win final approval in the upper house by the end of September.

Abe and his supporters say the changes are necessary for Japan to deal with the world around it, but the push is deeply unpopular among the general public.

Many legal scholars have said the changes are unconstitutional and critics say they will drag Japan into American wars in far-flung parts of the globe.

A constitution imposed by a post-war US occupation force barred Japan's military from combat except in self-defense.
