It'd be useful, if they were building a Death Star. Trying to weaponize laboratory equipment usually doesn't end too well.
Most weapons system have their genesis in a lab somewhere.

I cannot speak for the Japanese Rail Gun or Laser System development...I simply do not know enough about them and what stage they are at.

I do know that the US Rail Gun and Laser Systems have all been fired numerous times outside the lab.

Operational testing is occurring on the laser now aboard the USS Ponce. At sea testing of the rail gun will occur next year aboard the USNS Millinocket.

This technology is going to be deployed and operational in US Navy service in the relatively near future. I expect the Japanese are more than capable of doing the same...for them, the time frame may well be futher out...but it is clear that they intend to design these two new, improved Atago DDGs to accommodate them at a future date.

This article is just mashing various reports into one.
The 27DDG will probably not gain a railgun since JSDF only made requisition for basic research for the railgun in this

This will be a smaller railgun not use for land attack but will be used as a CWIS type system against a missile system that gets ever faster.

So Jeff-san you were right a ship will be fitted with a railgun as a CWIS.

Long range land attack railgun is probably still prohibited under Article 9 even with the recent "re-interpretation".
But CIWS rail gun is likely an even greater technical challenge than land attack rail gun. CIWS needs very high rate of fire, the main obstacle for operational rail gun with current technology. If you want guided shell, that's even more headache to build seeker that can survive the acceleration of rail gun.

Conceivably if it's accurate enough, a railgun CIWs could be a possibility due to it's hyper velocity and range compare to normal projectile even with very low RPM compared to current CIWs.

Due to it's velocity it will naturally travel straighter and has a much longer standoff engagement envelope thereby giving it the ability to fire off a few rounds.

I do agree that that tehnoclogy is still a couple decades away.. and laser CIWS will be implemented first.

There are three theories of missile defense.
Theory 1) is where systems like the Phalanx fit. The lead wall theory where you spray a area of the sky with armor piercing rounds in the hopes that enough hit the target to break it.
Theory 2) is similar but uses bigger rounds and a lower rate of fire with high explosive punch and proximity fuses in hopes of knocking the target out of the sky.
Theory 3) is where rail, counter missile and lasers usually sit. Point defense. Using precision targeting to intercept. Whether a missile with a missile or a laser against a missile or a rail gun shot against a missile. The point is to hit a bullet with a bullet. Now the advantage is that these systems are aimed to longer ranges then CIWS.

Which as DDG Cassard, Durand de la Penne etc... have a single MK-13 with 40 SM-1MR, less efficient with a rate of fire of 8 miss/mn vs Mk-41 1/sec but that is conditionned by the number of targets which can be simultaneously engaged by fire control radars which effectively determines the anti air power of a vessel.
Hatakaze have 2 SPG-51 each can simultaneously engaged 1 target, SPY-1 18 + 1 by AN/SPG-62, 3 on Kongo/Atago as Burke, 21 targets ,Ticonderoga have 4 .

Other 25 DD less big about 5000t, Akizuki sucessor for replaced Hatsuyuki and Asagiri
