Here is a GREAT video of the JS Izumo, DDH-183, leaving on sea trials.

Early on, in the video, a US Navy Burke class DDG moves from left to right in the foreground. I would have loved to been on that Burke.

Izumo, DDH-183 was launched in 2013 and is expected to be commissioned in March. The second, DDH-184, is building now and expected to be launched in August of this year.

It's definitely a carrier. I do not call it a destroyer, the Japanese officially call it a Helicopter carrying Destroyer.

The destroyer I am referring to is the US Burke destroyer that passes in front of it at the start of the video and which I show in the individual picture above.

Yes, I was referring to the illustrious DDH Helicopter carrying destroy. Mmmm, some destroyer. It sounds to me like attorneys were involved in the classification.

Here is an interesting document I found although it is entirely in Japanese.

It the Defense Program and Budget request drafted by the Ministry of Japan and it has outlines of all the plans the Ministry of Defense. It's quite an interesting read for example they are requesting a budget to procure 20 P-1s within this years budget as well as one Atago class DDG.
It's colorful even if you can't read it with many photos in it.

So this is the 3rd Atago? or is it funding for the 4th?

If funded in this budget...when do they start construction?

It will be good to see the JMSDF with four Atago class.

It will be the 3rd Atago and to obtain a discount they are going to order the Aegis System for the forth ship within this budget as well. Does not say when they will lay steel and I guess it depends on the availability of MHI Nagasaki shipyard which constructed the previous two Atago class, although they are pretty much full since they already scheduled to construct the 25DD.
They may start earlier if they appoint any of the other shipyards like Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and/or IHI.
As for candidates for the names, it would be most probably be named after a mountain. Possibilities are;
Hiei, Haruna, Takao, Maya, Nachi and/or Haguro.

Three more points I found interesting within the document.

1. On bottom half of page eight, MoD announces they will allocate 5.9 billion yen for R&D to miniaturize and integrate various anntenas to develop a new radar system.

2. On bottom half of page twelve they state they have allocated 1billion yen to improve the function of the Osumi to expand the well deck, strengthen the front elevator and, develop a CIC function.

3.On page thirty eight they state they have allocated 41.2 billion yen in developing a new fighter to be ready when they will decommission the F-2 R&D on the engine, HMD and a new radar system utilzing skin radar.

* On the bottom half of the same page although they have not specified the budget amount, they say they will start studies on Rail gun technology as well.

Thanks for that!

I looked at the whole report and was going to ask you today about those very pictures.

Here's another one:

JMSDF-VTOL.jpg

Is that a JAMSDF design VTOL aircraft similar to the Osprey, or is it supposed to just represent an Osprey for the paper? What is the wording with that?

Here's another:

JMSDF-LPD.jpg

Is that a new LPD? it is clearly not an Osumi but it has a well deck. IS that just supposed to represent an Osumi, or is it something new? What wording is there with that?

Finally, I did see a picture of the AAM-4B...any word on that?

Pretty good document...wish they had an English translation.
