Nikkei index surges past 1989's all-time high

I genuinely feel bad for the modern Japanese people, imagine a country backsliding for 35 years. It's probably better Japanese people don't visit China, the comparison would make them feel even worse.
This is just a textbook example of why stock market cap doesn't mean anything when it comes to reflecting how powerful the economy is. Especially when a lot is just due to cheap yen so speculation. Toshiba which was once one of the crown jewels of Japan isn't even listed anymore so that should tell you something.

Actually Japan's 30 years of deflation until recently meant that Japan is a lot cheaper than a lot of people assume, and if you look at things like GDP per working age per person, it actually does not look so bad when you strip out the effects of exchange rate fluctuations.

Japan stock market is surging. The yen is low, so tourists may find it a cheap place to visit.
