There is actually J12, J13 in the early 90s, but canceled. J14 won't be used because it pronounces like "going to die" in Chinese, J15, J16 already in production, J17, J18, J19, I don't if there are so such programs or not.

For the Z series, there are Z-9 to Z-19, I don't if there are Z-12, Z-13, Z-14, Z-16, Z-17 programs, But then Z-20

But for the Y series, There are Y-1 to Y-10, then jump to Y-20. That's why I am saying Y-20 breaks the convention.

If H-20 also exists, then H-20 also breaks the convention. Don't know why China so abdicated to 20.

What’s so wrong with “going to die”? As long as you take five enemies (at least) with you!
According to Miyamoto Musachi, my philosophical and spiritual guide, “the way of the warrior is the resolute acceptable of death!).
Well, most people like to think that Mainland China follows the same traditional East Asian culture as HK, Taiwan, S. Korea, Japan, etc, in things like avoiding "4". This is not true. Mainland Chinese don't care that much about this.

There are no shortage of "4" in the pennant number in PLAN ships, as oppose to South Korea Navy ships and ROCN ships. The same goes to aircraft and helicopter serial numbers.

Joke's on them the photo was actually taken in 2017... or was it? Either way @Deino you can share this new bit of info no Twitter to mess with them.

After you wrote that, I seem to recall a photo of the J/FC-31 on the deck of the concrete carrier back around then. hrm. False memory?

First KJ-600 mockup was spotted at the same place around January 2017, no? Then the actual prototype first broke cover with an image in august 2020.

Assuming this latest image is recently taken and assuming there's going to be same/similar period of introduction, (which is a huge assumption on so many levels) we might (or might not) see the first J-XY image 43 months from now. Meaning around January 2025. :D

Of course, I don't really think that's necessarily going to be true. We might see it much earlier. It's just something to think about.

The J-15's first flight took place in August 2009, no?

And the carrier mockup only began construction in October 2009 with a J-15 mockup appearing first at that time as well (

Assuming a same/similar period of introduction (which is a huge assumption on so many levels), we might (or might not) find out that the J-XY has actually flown two months ago. Meaning April 2021 :D

Of course, I'm not really thinking that's necessarily true. Maybe it hasn't flown yet. It's just something to think about

I'm sorry I couldn't resist.

I jest, because I'm sure you appreciate and understand, as a long term and seasoned PLA watcher, that the emergence of pictures are merely used to confirm long established rumours, and in this case, all that the picture of the FC-31 derived mockup we see on the carrier mockup facility, is that it confirms the long held consensus that an FC-31 derived aircraft is the 5th gen carrier based fighter.

A scale model has been spotted near the cement carrier in Wuhan. J-15T and the carrier borne AWAC were unveiled in a similar fashion.

Another view.

Is there a bigger version of that image available?

From all we know already some time ago and - even if you think I'm nitpicking - there is no J-31, just two FC-31 demonstrators. And by all we know, the future carrierborne fighter is rumoured to be called J-35-
Actually this is very interesting since navy variant of the J-20 will not only have better range/speed but also a larger internal payload, not to mention better sensors a well. Modifying the J-20 for the navy will arguably be cheaper as well since the J-20 is a proven platform. Yet for some reason the PLANAF went for the FC-31 instead.
