Other things can malfunction / have failures as well, eg a birdstrike on the canopy. This can result in a loss of the canopy. In this instance, the HUD can provide some protection from the oncoming wind to land the plane.

The F35 with its 2.2 kg heavy HMD system is already causing neck injuries in training. Currently the solution in China is simply to resort to HUD more in daily training and decrease everyday HMD use. Without a display panel installed this would be impossible.
Even without hi-g maneuvers, having 2.2 kg strapped to the head, with a pretty unbalanced weight distribution, cannot have positive effects over a long period of time.
Wonder if it's possible to just have a spherical screen around the pilot instead. With eye tracking tech these days that might be possible.
In the future the pilot(s) can just lay flat on an armchair like cockpit and intelligent displays will replace the windscreen. That way all the g force will be no more harmful than numbing your limbs by sleeping in the wrong position. But definitely not now.
