Shape is really weird, though

At the end of the day it is ultimately still a cartoon depiction with exaggerated proportions.

However, what we can see from it -- assuming the cartoon image is indeed meant to reflect something real -- we can note canted V tails and a chined nose.
Which, going back to the original question of "maybe this is a J-15" -- would make that somewhat unlikely.

Given what we know about the J-XY and knowing what it will basically look like, this is a fairly plausible cartoon-ized drawing of it under a tarp.

We also can see the full-height fuselage going right to and beyond the tail, more suitable for a single-engine plane. And weird (for a fighter plane) straight line formed by nosecone and the cockpit(maybe cartoonish depiction, though). No readily apparent shape of intakes. Straight delta.

I am almost sure this is just a picture and should be treated as such. Not necessarily, of course, but at the very least this shape isn't something most of us expect of the new plane.

If this cartoon emerged in absence of any context and in absence of years of gradually compounding evidence that J-XY will be a FC-31 derived fighter (with basically outright confirmation being the mockup on the Wuhan carrier mockup), then I would agree with you that this cartoon shouldn't have too much read into it.

But given we do have years of context and gradually compounding evidence and that this cartoon was referenced directly in relation to a new upcoming carrier based fighter straight from the horse's mouth, IMO the only reasonable question we can ask is: "which of the known upcoming carrier aircraft can it plausibly be depicting"?

Maybe. Maybe it's me, but I simply see too much of this pic in the new one:

And this is def not something I'd expect from a Chinese carrier-borne fighter.
Table model looks much closer to expectations.

According to the Chinese media the J-35 carrier-borne fighter jet will debut before year end, so just a couple of months away. Can't wait!

Considering the table model is a model with intended to be realistic proportions that depicts a proper aircraft rather than a cartoon with exaggerated proportions, of course the table model looks closer to expectations.

The question isn't whether the cartoon looks weird or not, the question IMO should be whether it can be interpreted to reasonably represent J-XY.
