The thread title says it all. A J-XY based on the FC-31 is probable but not certain, that's my understanding anyway. As to whether this paper has to do with that conversion or an exercise in a clean sheet design, that's anybody's guess.

Considering it's from Shenyang, and considering the elements of the models cannot be for J-20 (e.g.: no canard in the position behind the DSI air intake lip), and the specifics regarding the "before" and "after" aspects that are described, I think the chances of this being a "before" (FC-31) and "after" (J-XY) are not low at all.

And of course, this paper would be the one that @Interstellar talked about here:

Before I saw your reply, I had edited my post to point out that some illustrations from the paper show existing fuselage features of FC-31.

The tailfins do look different. They no longer look swept back like on the F-35 and it looks like half but bigger of the triangular shaped ones on the original "J-21" tailfins.

Nomenclature alert.

There is no "original J-21" -- instead I think you are referring to FC-31 v1.
(J-21 might be the name of the land based J-XY/J-35 variant, but that has yet to be determined, and I suspect that's not what you're referring to)

The entire model is broadly depicting the FC-31 31001 airframe, aka FC-31 v1.
The FC-31 31003 airframe, aka FC-31 v2 is the one with the swept back tails that are clipped, etc

.... In any case, the model itself is not very interesting, because it just looks like n FC-31 v1 model of average quality and average detail.
The model is not J-XY/J-35/whatever its name will end up being.
