Interesting, it looks like the black smoke was intentionally done, may be part of flight tests?
Increasing power, rich mixture, dark exhaust gases ... it's a constant change between a lot and a little power, as you need, for example, on the short final approach to the aircraft carrier landing deck.

An engine must be able to react quickly to these changes in power. Maybe it's a test at a safe altitude?

A nice comparison between a FC-31 prototype (top) and J-35 (bottom).

Isn't that the FC-31V2?

J-31 (if it actually exists) will probably be more like the J-35 with the hump and such, only with smaller wings, gears, and less throughout anti-corrosion treatments?

I think it is kind of lame how it became more similar to the F-35 when they changed the cockpit. But it does make sense to add more fuel to the design. Still this slim design looks much better than that fat box the F-35.

Here are some of the changes that are noticable. Off the big ones, besides the whole new back line, which includes the new cockpit cover layout, the length of the fuselage is a another big item. As if engines are shorter or the intakes are shorter, resulting in overall diferent position of the engines and shorter fuselage.

As for F35 cockpit similarity, in my eyes the final design is closer to F-35B while the FC31v2 design was closer to F-35A.
