J-35 carrier fighter (PLAN) thread

A type 076 LHA with light aircarft carrier capability vs an aircraft carrier is like a jack of all trades vs a specialist. A jack of all trades can be more versatile but a specialist can do things much better.

It is a matter of distribution and employment of assets and resources. If you have limited resources you need a type 076 to do both amphibious assault jobs and light aircraft carrier jobs. If you are rich, just add more aircraft carrier.

Why would US Marines, an independent military branch, chose to use LHA to base their F-35B is may be because their missions rest mainly on amphibious assaults, and having an independent air wing (from USN aircraft carriers and USN aircrafts) means they would not need to tie their mission destinations to movements and deployments of USN aircraft carriers. Of course, both USN and US Marines can always work together but sometimes US Marines may have to work alone.

Unlike US Marines, PLA Marines are part of PLA Navy, they work as a part of PLAN deployment. Do they need a separate air wing to base on an LHA or LHD?

I think the point is do you want to use manned aircraft like F-35 to support your amphibious assauts, or do you prefer to use armed strike drones? And what will the design of type 076 be? Will it be designed for strike drones or manned fixed wing strike jets?

We shall have the anwer when type 076 appear.
Considering what SpaceX and PLA did in the past decade, I cannot convince myself that sea controlling would still be a task for China/US surface fleets 20 years later. Space based systems would take the job and surface fleet should focus on amphibious/ASuW operations.

I am confused:confused:. What did SpaceX do in the past decade in sea controlling?

They successfully developed Falcon, Starlink and developing Starship. Starship is even cheaper than a bomber for delivering a bomb to 1000nm away, leave alone experience of Starlink can be easily transferred to any C4ISR constellations(e.g. MDA’s new constellations, Black Jack and space based GMTI constellation) it’s unthinkable to build a constellation with 10,000 satellites to monitor every boat around world 10 years ago, but now it’s possible thanks to Starlink.

I have no doubt that in future sea controlling will be a task for rockets and satellites, rather than any ships.

Actual ships will be still needed, just like troops on the ground is needed to hold territory.

BUT, space based assets will play a much bigger role on the sea, that I completely agree with you (and rockets/missiles/hypersonics etc. will also be important).

You can come back to this subject when SpaceX does really deliver a bomb to the sea. Before that it is way off topic.

Not so way off, after all Falcon 9 has been cheaper than cruise missiles for delivering even for now.

I think the type 76 LHA will have a very similar role to that of type 75. The ability to launch UAV gives it better situation awareness and the ability to launch J-35 or J-15 gives it more air superiority in the case the enemy does not have fighters in the location. Still, the primary role should be very similar to the type75. Occasionally, a J-35 from the carrier might land there to refuel and take off, but that should not be its primary role.
