I've noticed the nit-pickers on other forums have pointed to the apparent landing gear door that seems too big to land safely. Is it correct that this door opens, the landing gear comes out, and then closes again. We're just seeing it open on the ground for maintenance purposes?

Oh yeah I actually never thought about that before, I think your assumption is correct.
The ground clearance is quite dangerous if the door doesn't close. I'm sure CAC won't go to all the trouble of building such a beastly stealth fighter and screwing up the landing gear (if it the door does fully open while landing I'm pretty certain they'll fix it up for production models).

I guess we'll know when get see pictures of it taking off and landing.

I don't think that's the landing gear door, I think the big door you see opened is the maintenance door.

I think the hydraulic system isn't powered causing the door to hang out.

Is it too much a stretch to call this fighter a 'modified' J-10, as made by a PLAAF deputy commander? ;)

According to a humorous post on Feiyang the J-XX is indeed a heavily heavily heavily heavily heavily modified J-10 since canards are not feature on either the F-22 or the T-50.

My take on what "Jane" was saying, is while there is the AL-31 and WS-10 series to use in the meantime, what about in a 1-2yrs time when perhaps something closer in power to the W-15 is desirable
