Brat, I'm sorry to report that the link you PMed me didn't work. Of course, it's walled and I had to use proxy sites to "climb over the wall" But I tried a couple of such sites, all giving me the same message: The site doesn't exist (or something to that effect).

I like this one even better than goodboy's clearer ones, because this video is so real with so many reference points, which leads to my question: Could anyone here estimate the altitude of the J-20 during this test run? It looks to me to be so low, about 100 meters?
Much higher than 100 meters, but probably no higher than 2000 meters.

How sure are you about that? From where the camera is, looking at the edge of the runway, it looks to be within 2000 meters, I was trying to sort of triangulate based on that spot... And the plane, when closest to the camera (which doesn't seem to be zooming in and out), looks too large to be that far/high, doesn't it?

At 100 meters the plane wouldn't have enough room to maneuver for the stunts it's doing. Also keep in mind that just because it looks like it's only about two or three times higher up than the trees (using around the 1:20 mark as reference), it could look that way because it's much further away from the trees and apartments than it looks. For the J-20 to be exactly where the trees are, its length would probably have to match the height of the tree to be only 100 meters up, but it's much smaller than that, which tells me it's both further and higher...

Yeah, 100 some meters would be to scary to think about. I'm clueless, but 2000 meters appears too much. Could you find a way and do a more precise estimate?

That would be impossible, seeing as this is a video and we have no fixed relative point.

2000 meters is really not that high up if you think about it. 2000-5000 meters is about the height they do airshows in if I'm not mistaken..

We have one fixed point: The camera. We need another reference point far away but at a known distance. I was using the runway roughly for that purpose... But without any object-of-known-hight over there and without knowing the distance between the camera that that object, it probably is as good as useless.

Well, the problem with gauging distance and height with objects in the air is that there is never anything right next to them. Nothing like gauging height and distance with objects on land.

EDIT:
Try this? :p

Hehe, you are too fast in response for me to rephrase or self-correct.

Now, have you noticed the Hong Kong news piece which claims that the J-20 will be inducted the later half of 2013? Where do you think they got that idea?

Except for the South China Morning Post, I almost never buy into the HK press. Too much yellow journalism. At least with Mainland Press you can parse the news based on the propaganda position.
