Does anyone know if China has an equivalent of a NAWS China Lake, Groom Lake/ Area 51 or a White Sands type missile range? if so where is it and what are the names of the bases?

BM test range is called 罗布泊 "the sea of dead" by ancient local lore, it is in the middle of Gobi desert, you can test some 3.3M ton bomb and no one hears the bang.

Anyone knows why american names one of her own "place" the name of "China Lake"?

...
- this coming July 1st; the 90th anniversary of formation of CPC.
- this coming August 1st; the 84th year PLA is formed.
- this coming October 1st; the 62th national day.

... Please correct me if I am wrong on the parade thing.

There is something called "Big day dedication project", that those project MUST BE finished before some big days. The early years of PRC have much of this kind of project (which accomplished with astonishing quality as well, in the cost of labour). Some example: Tian'an men square re-overhull, from a decaying courtyard to world's No.1 square; People's Heros Monument, M8 earthquake resistent monument finished in 9 month; the coal production "rate" of certain year doubles every half year...

Even delecated machine manufacturing (like military machine) do things like "come out before National day"... but when times passes people are more realistic. People start to sense that hi-tech stuff like rocket or J-20, is something better not hurry. There is still "Big day dedication project", but that's more "presenting" the project than actually "keep a schedule".

So realistic people don't put coin on "something will come out at certain day" anymore.

Regarding the parade, it surely looks like every 10 years per time... if there is nothing critical of national interest...

Think about it, if in an odd year, someone showing teeth that he is going to invade China soon, why not China gives the world a much needed parade that shows some teeth of his own? Deterrent is still better than actual war, isn't it?

no,
but since I guess the space people did it on 1/11.
avic just couldn't take it and has to respond :D

there was always this comparison/rivalry between space and aero programs in the chinese system...

I guess it is just the "middle finger" date.

VERY good aspect of this issue, VERY interesting!

Never thought it before, it might be the simple competition between differnt firms... I was stuck at searching famous "Chinese-National-Power-Leap great contributor" birth or pass out days.

Nice, but I wonder if it will only be for the export market -- I can't imagine many countries who need an F-35 class fighter that won't go for the F-35... I think this single engined fighter will be destined for the PLAAF to replace J-10s -- act the F-35 to the F-22 for the J-20.

Interesting that it will supposedly be single engined, that may mean the PLANAF either aren't interested in an F-35C fighter (or a real 5th gen) for themselves, or they don't mind operating singled engine aircraft off carriers... Personally I'd prefer the PLAAF and PLANAF go for a common platform with two engines in the class of the F-35 or India's "A"MCA... But maybe they don't have any medium thrust engines under development which can power a real 5th gen/medium weight fighter (2 WS-13s probably aren't very good), and will have to resort to WS-15 instead.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm super keen for the rumors and fanboy pics of the inevitable J-XX "lite" to start coming out, I'm already nostalgic over the pre 2011/this year era when every bit of news about the J-XX was met with both excitement and disdain from detractors.
With the J-20 shown to be real hopefully we can have a few less of the latter.

Early days yet. :D

Could this be the "stealth" JF-17 by any chance?

I doubt it, the stealth JF-17 I think always had the amateur fanboy-ish smell to it without real support from anyone in Huitong's calibre, and nothing's really eventuated of the concept. A stealthy JF-17 will be in a whole different class to CAC's J-XX "lite" anyway and it will detract from the JF-17s original goal which was to be cheap but capable "enough". If Pakistan wanted a stealth fighter it'd be easier to have real 5th generation VLO than upgrade the JF-17, which will increase costs and won't be able to replace their main fighter fleet.
It's easier to design a new aircraft from scratch than trying to half heartedly stealthize a limited platform like the Thunder.

I don't think the "silent JF-17" could ever be a true stealth plane. Don't think there will be enough space for internal weapons.
