That's a very short takeoff run!

I wonder if the lack of TVC is just for early trials or whehter PLAAF have determined that the additional maneuverability conferred by TVC simply isn't worth the extra procurement and maintenance costs and the reduction in thrust.

As for PL21, surely we don't know enough about it - or even if it really exists - to make any serious comments?

Now you mentioned it the sound is not the usual piercing jet engine sound I am used too. I frankly do not remember any jet engine sound this way.

I would be surprised if they decide not to go with TVC since they’ve been doing flight integration testing with a TVC engine for so long. My guess right now is that the FCS integration with TVC isn’t ready to an acceptable degree yet so they’re proceeding without it for now. Not sure if TVC itself will re-enter the picture with J-20B testing or if it’s been pushed to a future version. Might not be too hard to retrofit TVC though since it wouldn’t be a complete engine change. I suppose we will see…

Now *that* is interesting news. Wonder what the margin of difference is in maneuvering envelope between the two. Also wonder whether they’ll try to do something about potential thrust loss.

TBH though they could just operate a 3D TVC as if it were a 2D TVC and limit its range of motion.
