ummmmmm let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. Especially with J-20, which is it self a design that from the very beginning has large operating range in mind. I highly doubt that they are only realizing now that they need more fuel, or that the limited space of that enlarged spine can provide any substantial gains if used as a fuel tank.
Yeah, many insiders said the same.
This new back hunch variant is like mid-modification that was previously imposed on j10a->j10b/c. First flight will be conducted with ws-10c in next few days.

Translation - It seems that the increase of the back is conducive to increasing fuel and reducing drag at supersonic speeds.

Did they change it to improve the drag perf or to increase fuel capacity?
If the latter is main reason for the change, it might indicates higher FC of ws-15.
Okay interesting, although I see this design change as an aerodynamic optimization that just happens to bring in some extra space, instead of extra space (for fuel or otherwise) being the primary cause for the design change
then what about these pics released today. says J-20 powered by twin WS-15 engines.
so much confusion. can you please recap the entire story.

I’d wager that the possibly higher TSFC of ws15 was taken into account for the initial design, as ithas always been the target power plant for J-20. It’d be plain stupid not to design the fuel capacity according to what ws15’s supposed TSFC would be.
Still, if we take tsqzsl’s word and treat the extra space as extra fuel, it might mean that PLAAF when deploying ws10-equipped J-20 has found that they can do with some extra fuel for the ws15
(line of thought: ws15 has higher TSFC, thus higher fuel consumption at same thrust, thus lower range than ws10 if all else equal. So if the PLAAF sees the max range of ws10-equipped J20 as just enough, then it follows that without extra fuel when switched to ws15 the decreased range may not be enough for what PLAAF desires)

The hump kind of makes the new design look like a Mig-31, unfortunately ugly in my opinion, but it's probably no coincidence considering Mig-31 is also designed for optimizing supersonic flight.
