This is a pedantic quibble, but there's a difference between all aspect VLO and broadband VLO. The former refers to a plane being VLO from all angles, the latter means a plane is VLO with respect to a broad range of radar frequencies. They're independent concepts.

Yes, but that works both ways, hence the H-20.

Is that an issue with the physical dimensions of the F-22's weapons bay or a limitation of the munitions compatible with it? Furthermore, you don't need to sink a ship to have significant (even decisive) military impact. Mission-killing a ship is often sufficient.
New tech may make stealth even more difficult in future, for example, will the B21 be stealthy against look down radars in orbit?

It's unlikely the F-35s were sans Luneberg lenses. The last thing the US would want to do is give a China a look at a "clean" F-35. On the other hand you can be certain the US knows exactly the size of the F-35s RCS with the lenses in place and can extrapolate reaction times and detection ranges.
Uh huh, I see. And are the people calculating those reaction times and detection ranges on the same tech team for the "F-22's dressed up with Chinese flags bombing Moscow plan" or are they a different team? LOL Keep coping. Two can play the make up stories game. And the last thing the Chinese would do is allow the US accurate data to extrapolate from so seeing the ballooned RCS, they purposefully intercepted much later than they could have to give the US a false set of data to cause miscalculation.

One other point that Yankee and ShiLao raised in the podcast is that the USAF is very concerned with whether J-20 is air superiority or true multi role like the F-35 because the latter is an offensive weapon. An aircraft with advanced strike capabilities can pose a much greater threat against US naval forces than a dedicated fighter, and this is especially complicated with a fifth gen since you can’t determine the missile profile easily since the weapons are internal. A carrier strike group will only send two or three aircraft to intercept an air to air fighter, but will exhaust everything at its disposal to stop a strike fighter.
Playing devil's advocate against that point, I think the Americans tend to have a more jack of all trades philosophy in general when it comes to their equipment and doctrine, with the F-35 being the prime example with its 3 variants. Their idea is any individual unit can be an "offensive" threat, similar to the Distributed Lethality concept for USN. And perhaps they are applying this thinking here for J-20. From USAF perspective it makes sense since the US can't concentrate their forces like China in the 1st Island chain especially, and they are expected to perform duties all around the world.

For China there's already so many maritime strike options from H-6s, J-16s, to the surface and sub fleet, to MRBMs, YJ-100s and the list goes on. China can concentrate its firepower in the conflicts she envisions fighting. Would it make sense to add another strike option in the J-20? I personally think having J-20 optimized for air superiority (and indications are it seems to be) will actually benefit China more (and more pain the behind for America) in its deck of ace cards to play. The pilots will focus their training to be masters of the air, neutralizing the more numerically superior F-35s, take out AWACs, tankers etc and create a "no-fly zone". Not saying J-20 can't have any strike capability but it would a distant secondary like for F-22.

As a side note - this is something the Indians would fall for though. Anything from Russia up, not so much.

Find it hard to believe china will send J20 to do interception or normal petrol in ECS and risk exposing their radar cross section to potential enemy. It similar to Indian media claiming their fighters detected J20 near the border.

yeah, but Indian claim is almost certain false, and this one is much likely to be true

When there is corroboration from both sides, it is very likely to be true. J-20 pilots have claimed that they have encountered and intercepted foreign aircraft and now it has been confirmed by USAF general.

The Indian claim was a classic case of misreported information. IAF never came out and stated that they've detected the J-20. What actually happened was that B.S. Dhanoa came out and claimed that J-20 is not stealth and that MKIs could easily spot it from "several kilometers away" (which is technically not wrong :D) and somehow it morphed into Su-30MKIs have spotted J-20s at 150KM range in Tibet. Never mind that MKI's radar has a range of 110KM against typical fighter sized target.

There is no need to get defensive about that comment. China is no longer a weakling. J-20 most likely would be flying with Luneberg lens on these interceptions. And it would be hard for USAF to figure out the exact range of Chinese air defense radar/systems since the natural response from China's air defense is never going to be the same every time. PLAAF will scramble the aircraft that's available at that time. Even if they wanted, I don't see how the reaction time could be the same every time. At the same time, it's a completely normal practice for USAF to try to probe Chinese ADIZ to see how China would react to such an incursion. Just as China should be doing the same to Japanese and USAF bases in the area.

It has to be pretty tough for Indians at this point. China has 3 times as many J-20s as India does of Rafales. And there is no real path for India to 5th generation aircraft. To the point that Indians claimed Rafale can be -20dbMS from certain angle! The funniest thing I heard on that podcast is when they compared the possibility of India going back to su-57 purchase like a man going back to his ex-gf because he has no other choice.

On the other hand, MKI detecting J-20 with Luneberg lens down is quite normal.

Well, J-20 will be more and more common. There is no reason to shrink in fear. You can always intercept with Luneberg lens down. If it's the easiest to send a J-20 to intercept F-35, a J-20 will get sent. At this point, I think both US and China have a good idea of the stealth level of other side.
