Biggest advantage is the potential to stuff jamming or laser pods on, increasing airframe capability but not highly compromising its stealth as with pods on the F-35.

On the other hand, I'm wondering if the side bay could eventually be deleted in later J-20s, perhaps with retractable pylons moved to the bottom, in order to accommodate a larger main weapons bay. It's the main limitation of the current J-20; engines likely won't suffice for enhanced internal strike payloads, limiting the J-20's ability to be a devastating counter-counter-stealth platform by hard-killing enemy detectors from out of their detection range.

Air inlet.

Air inlet.
Aware of that, but they could possibly modify the air inlet to allow for greater internal bay space.

The way weapons are going, the J-20 would have been great in 2011, or even 2017, but stuff like the F-15X is going to fly, micromissiles are eventually going to arrive on the scene, B-21 will be able to function as EODAS counter-stealth AESA, etc. The J-20 needs to be modified for greater capability to remain competitive.

I don't think it's possible.

(Note: Nobody has seen the actual shape of J20's inlet so don't expect it to be 100% accurate)

The design change required to make the main bay larger is going to be absurd compare to the advantage it bring.

And for a jet designed with full Air-Superiority in mind, whether removing the side bay would be an "advantage", is very questionable...

J20 already have the biggest weapon bay in all 5th gen fighters, and with the network system they're building, J20 could stay stealth and simply guide the missiles fired from another jet (and in the future, the unmanned ones).

Personally I'm curious what make you think J20 needs a larger weapon bay? Because they can only carry 4 PL15? Remember F22 could only carry 4 AIM120 until they make the wings smaller on the AIM120C. J20 is designed to carry 6 missiles in the main bay, and they'll do that by making the weapon's size fit the bay size, not the other way around.

Maybe. What you don't know is what does each nation think is the greater/future capability? China may think its ASATs and Anti-AWACs and the US might think its more air superiority.

Problem is, the J-20, among its other roles, is supposed to be anti-AEW&C. The Su-27 line, for your information, is not as capable of interception as the F-15 and MiG-25/31 lines as it's more optimized for low speed maneuverability.

As for modifying the J-20, this is rumored to be among the objectives; as the J-20 is supposed to be developed further into a family of systems a la the Su-27. A striker is rumored to be in the bin, so a J-20 derivative with larger internal bays (i.e, by widening the body or reshaping the inlets to liberate more space for the weapons bay which sits below them) could end up being a Su-30 analogue, while a future J-20 with some strike modifications but designed for omni-role performance a la the Su-35 could inherit the striker J-20's internal bay layout.

Based on pages on this thread, the number of J20 in 20s , i like to ask manqiangrexue why the number is not so high. China has alot of STEM and money. Is j20 or j31 more important?

Why would you ask me? Am I an engineer with AVIC or PLAAF? My guess is as good any anybody else's here. Further improvements? Waiting for WS-15? How many are there? Nobody here knows. Go read up the thread for further J-20 questions.

Random pointless question not worth response.
