Maybe just not to put all eggs in the same basket and to keep Shenyang team fit.
That is assuming that PLAN is willing to risk failing in combat to choose an aircraft that does not fit their need just to keep a company alive. That is a crime.

There are many ways to keep a team fit, by transferring people between different programs or organizations. NOT by selecting an under-performing design.

I don’t think the SAC team is exactly in trouble when they are producing high two digit numbers of flankers every year. That said, let’s get back on topic.

Of course I didn't think SAC team has trouble, was only objecting the notion that "SAC need to be saved". Some times I get really annoyed by the repeating notion of "save SAC by giving some bread, save Russia by giving some bread".

F-35 and F-22 are both made by Lockheed Martin, there is no "choosing an under-performing design to save another team" like you proposed "CAC vs. SAC". Isn't it? The bottom line is that F-35 or FC-31 were chosen for their intended purpose, not because one team need to be saved.

Never said it was for saving a team... it could be just keeping, preserving and improving expertise. We are getting off subject wildly...
