I wonder what the feeling of the pilots and crew was like in that brigade making that huge jump in tech. The changes in training, doctrine, schedule everything must have been insane.

This is interesting … seems as if another FTTB unit received J-20, namely the 171st according to this one with the serial number 74525.

An explanation could be that zhe 172nd is transferring its older J-20 since it is getting J-20A?!

Hmmmm really? On the Flankers thread and on Scramble, 99th AB is listed as operating J-16:

J-16 with tail number 71303 from the 99th Brigade at Hotan AB

Did they really go to J-20 and then immediately switch to J-16? That seems suspect. You also don't list 99th in your rundown of J-20 units on post #2720 in this thread. That post could do with an update, we seem to have gotten a bunch of units confirmed as operating J-20s in the 4 months since that post.

I would think a domestic EV would fit better, given the jump from analog to digital cockpit, and huge jumps in degree of domestic development and production.

Thinking about the J-20A/S joining the 172nd AB (a FTTB unit) at the same time the J-35A joined the 1st AB (a 1st-line combat unit), I wonder if the PLAAF is waiting on the WS-15 to become available in numbers to induct the J-20A/S in 1st-line combat units.
