Do you think they will still develop a VTOL variant and if so whether they will adapt it from J-20 or J-35?

I think maybe the 35 as it is already navalised.

I doubt it.
This has also been extensively discussed in the past.

It's possible they will develop some tech demonstrators for a STOVL capable fighter-esque airframe for the purposes of industry use, but at this stage I would be surprised if the PLA was interested in one given where they are with everything else.

The main justification for VTOL F35s is to operate off of LHA/LHDs. Since the PLAN is putting full length EMCATS on its 076s, there really any need for the cost, time investment and performance compromises associated with a new VTOL design.

In the mid 2010s there were years of debate over whether the PLAN would go with a navalized J-20 for their carrierborne 5th gen fighter or if they would go with something based off FC-31, and J-35 has settled that debate.

There is no need to resurrect this topic which has already been conclusively answered years ago.
J20 has a larger mtow and therefore has more range firpower and drone capability... J35 is able to carry less.. they are different planes

Yes, they are different planes with different weight classes and different sizes.

However there are no indications that the PLAN is interested in another 5th generation fighter to complement J-35, and the original competition for their naval 5th gen fighter was between a J-20 derivative and the FC-31 derivative (J-35).
This is not a matter for debate.

You don't have to wonder whether they will navalize the J-20, just accept that there is no reason or interest for a navalized J-20, and that this matter was settled years ago.

on the carrier with limited space, quantity is more important than quality
