I was curious, are there many paint pattern for the J-20? Are they all painted the same across units now in this current round dual tone grayscale pattern? I seem to recall at some point some were painted in a more geometric splinter style dual tone, and of course one of the earlier prototype was just painted full black - aside prototype yellow, are there any other paint pattern observed on J-20, all versions?

The geometric splinter camo that the F-35 aggressor squadron draws inspirations from was only seen at Zhuhai Airshow. It never entered service.

first of all there is difference between cobalt superalloys and monocrystalline blades.. but since he is talking about DD9 being used in WS-15. that is high pressure single crystal superalloy blade.

DD6 = 2nd generation
DD9 = 3rd generation
DD15 = 4th generation

DD15 literally display at Zhuhai Air Show 2021 for public.. at that time, this was the most advance high pressure single crystal superalloy manufactured in China. temperature capacity can reach 1200° Celsius without any coating.. and everybody knows the pattern of China. they don't display latest tech unless its successor is already under development or near completion..

so in 2021, 4th generation being displayed in air show.. if you check my old massages, 5th generation single crystal superalloy was under development back in 2021 and we are about to enter in 2025.. remember what Liu Daxiang said in his presentation. ''we also have successfully did breakthrough in next generation engine technologies''..

nobody knows what material/components being used in WS-15 engines.. but we can only guess through bidding information and some inside information..

DD15 being available in 2021 and WS-15 material selection has completed in 2023. now you can guess what components can be used in WS-15 engines.
WS-15 most likely do not use latest tech. They use last gen tech that is extensively tested. Current best tech is likely in labs, or under testing.

@Deino, IMO we should actively avoid posting machine scaled up images of milestone pictures like this (or at least be very vigilant towards machine/AI scaled up pictures) because it introduces confusion as to "which image is real".

It wasn’t me who made this … it was posted as a reply to my original tweet and I didn’t notice before posting it! But yes, you are correct.

Depends what one means by "latest tech." Lastest (i.e. experimental tech, e.g. HPT CMC rotors, fully 3D printed combustion chamber, etc.) tech? Then I agree.

However, personally I'm leaning towards that the first operational WS-15 blocks will use latest available tech. This means things like the 4th (or even later) generation blades, and even tentative, i.e. partial applications of the actual latest tech, perhaps CMC stators/vanes.

Just a thought ... if this image is indeed only two months old it is a but surprising this particular aircraft is still not painted!
He could've just held on to the photo for a while.

He's one of those guys who likes to downplay the progress of the Chinese aviation industry, going as far as making stuff up.

It is certainly possible that he could've just held onto this, and just released it two months ago as "proof" that WS-15 will never use TVC, per his caption. He then proceeded to praise (a bit too exaggerated even) the benefits of TVC and ignore the circumstantial nuances in this. That along with saying WS-15 still uses relatively outdated materials to support his belief that China is very behind in utilizing TVC technology and just turbofan engines in general.

Truly odd.

The image was first posted two months ago on that account, but it doesn't mean the photo was taken two months ago.

Regardless of when the photo was first posted online, we have no way of knowing when it was first actually photographed.
