When a native Chinese says "不错", he/she means they are satisfied with it and they like it.

For instance, when Chairman Mao and his followers were discussing his successor, they asked him what he thought of Hua Guofeng. He simply said "this youngster 不错". That was all it took for Hua to become the next Chairman of China. So apparently, "不错" is a stamp of approval for typical Chinese.

In this case, when the pilot said the J-20's low speed agility is 不错, he has given his stamp of approval to the J-20's performance at low speed. He is however over-joyed with its performance at supersonic speed.

Personally, I think you guys are way too focused on the subsonic/supersonic portion of the interview. Here is a screenshot of the interview where the pilot unambiguously states that the J-20 has exceptional maneuverability.

any "serious" discussion of any aircraft Blitzo, will of necessity include the aerodynamic features and properties of that aircraft, as well as similar features of the same class aircraft..

the J-20 has rather unique aerodynamics for a large L/O Fighter aircraft, those of necessity will be discussed and debated,,, but I have avoided this discussion because it does involve, "The Usual Suspects"

I wasn't talking about the last few pages -- I was talking about the discussions that Mig-29 used to get into with a few of us on this forum, back in the day.

Not to turn this into a linguistics snoozefest, but I also think it’s not good practice to focus purely on a specific word or turn of phrase when trying to translate words.

These are combat pilots, not profession writers, and when normal people speak, especially in terms of making comparisons, it is especially important to take into account the proper and full context.

The pilot’s words to me are more comparing the he J20’s agility in the two speed ranges against each other rather than other planes.

In this context, the ‘not bad’ (its already been well established that ‘not bad’ actually means pretty good in colloquial Chinese use as opposed to its literal translation, so I’m not going to bother labouring the point too much again here) of the J20’s subsonic agility is more in relation to the absolutely dominance of the J20 at supersonic speeds as opposed to comparing to the benchmark performance of other types.

For example, if the J20 gets on average a 10-1 positive kill ratio against flankers in subsonic speeds, but gets a 20-0 positive kill ration against Flankers in supersonic speeds, the pilot’s words would still ring turn that the J20’s subsonic performance is not bad compared to its subsonic dominance.
