A lovely "primer bird", do we have a serial on this airplane? I'm assuming this is a new build? very nice, and happy to see China adopting the WS-10 on J-20 finally.

No.We cannot "assume" anything safely without reliable evidences. In the case of J-20, that evidence is either Photographs ( with serial numbers) or "official" admission of the numbers.

So far we’ve only seen primer versions of the production WS-10 birds. Once those are seen in frontline units then we can assume that batch production has started.

Do you mean the person wearing the helmet by "Old pilot comrade"?

If so, he is not a pilot. He is a sci-tech adviser to PLAF from the Chinese engineering academy. This photo was from a report in August 2018, which was discussed in this forum. The report was about PLA (all branches) establishing organizational collaboration with science and technology community.
