It's probably harder to train pilots than it is to train tank operators.

There is no probably about it, but since much of the corrosive ideology stems from those countries, and have very influential believers and backers in key positions in government, it would not be unreasonable to assume there would also be followers of that idiology who have infiltrated and/or been deliberately planted within the military by fellow highly placed believers.

Even if the homeland of this ideology does not turn overtly terrorist itself, there are also plenty of past precedents to give reasonable grounds to suggest they would not be unwilling to supply training, or even send their own pilots in covertly to fly any jets friendly 'rebels' captured.

We are talking about a piece of fiction at the end of the day. And in my view, such a wholesale state sponsored takeover of a state by terrorist pawns and/or a coup by terrorists who have successfully mass infiltrated the military of the targeted country; is far more current and realistic than North Koreans infiltrating an army to effectively sack key western capitals for example.

It doesn't have to be probable, only possible. And given events over the last few years, no one could honestly say such things are categorically impossible.

Such movies have always unrealistic elements. In Top Gun we are supposed to believe the F-14 could win a dogfight.

F-14 with F110 engine handily out performs the F-15 and F-16 in many dogfight scenarios. Even with the despicable TF30 engine it still outperform the F-15 in some dog fighting scenarios thanks to its ability to use its computer controlled swinging wings to tune its lift to drag ratio in real time over a much broader range of speeds and attitudes than could a fixed geometry fighter with or without maneuvering flaps.

People have this notion that a fighter is either a good dog fighter across the board or a bad dog fighter across the board. In fact dog fighting performance has many aspects, many fighters unbeatable in one respect is not so good in another.

The difference between a competent and a great fighter pilot is a great pilot is able to think ahead, and keep the dog fight in a state where his own fighter can exploit the strongest aspects of its dog fighting performance, while prevent the opponent from turning the table on him by steering the fight away in a direction where the opponent's fighter might have the advantage.

The F-14 is such a stable designed aircraft that the aircraft is already bleeding energy when the pilot is just thinking about changing direction. The viable swept wing design doesn't compensate anything but is rather the reason why the F-14 is quite the subpar dogfighter.

The E-M theory is quite clear about the quality of the F-14 as fighter. There is a reason why the delta-canard design like the J-20 is a thing.

There's a huge discrepancy between US and China manufacturing prowess as F35 already in the production number of 240s and j20 still in low teens.
