Congratulations
I wonder if this means the WS-15 is still a ways off, since testing a new engine on the J-20 and then introducing a new engine into production would all take more time and effort than just sticking with AL-31s.

It IS still ways off. You may remember a member called "maya" (well known for his engine leaks) who said to fully complete the development of the WS-15 would take at least 10 yeard from the successful completion of high altitude 'core testing'. That was back in 2008/2009.

So by the most optimistic estimates, the final version of the WS-15 would be ready to be tested on the J-20 by 2019 but will takes more years for mass production.

IMHO 2025 (ish) would be a realistic date for the 1st WS-15 powered J-20B to enter service.

J-10 entered service around 2004 while the J-10B around 2013. Even if we reduce the J-20B development to 4 years that'll still be 2020+ timelines.

Of course remember Maya, and it seems a lot of what he told us when he was still around seems to have panned out more or less, so I can't say I'd be surprised if the WS-15 entered production no earlier than 2025. That said I personally suspect that the timeline for production might be much quicker than what we've experienced with the WS-10, assuming that their experience with prior projects count for *something*.

Pupu said that the thrust is under 140kN so I doubt it is IPE.

Then it is the WS-10B with a max thrust of 1400kN kgf (137 kN). The current WS-10 series cannot exceed 14000 kgf. From what I gathered. Only the WS-10IPE and WS-15 can do that.

137 kN is fairly low compared to the 147 kN of the 117 and especially the 156+ kN of the F119. Dry thrust and supercruise is the other mystery. But at least the WS-10B gives a high priority asset like the J-20 full independence.

Not a surprise, I have mentioned a while back that J20 will feature WS10x and there is guy trying run his mouth and said this makes no sense. I just replied back just wait n see, no need running the mouth, arguing for the sake of argument, trying to show people he's a smart ass and all that. So, what do you know?
