Are those "slight improvements" really improvements at all?

Weren't those circled parts consistent with what we first say on J-20 s/n 2101?

The only slight possible difference might be that the dielectric grey fairings on the tailstings are slightly different to 2101 in terms of coverage (the overall geometry of the tailstings are the same as 2101), but even then the overall geometry of the tail sting is identical as 2101.

Comparing with this older image showing 2001 vs 2101 vs the latest 210x there are indeed a few differences. IMO however the most obvious one - IMO chaff & flare dispensers - were omitted !

Sure, but I think that and the tailsting cover are the only differences? The differences on the main wing and canards which were circled do not seem to be differences at all?

It appears the chaff and flare dispensers (if those are what they are) may have been moved backwards a little compared to 201X prototypes.:

It's a little bit strange why none of them were present on 2101 at all..

You know, with all of this, I honestly think we are seeing LRIP J20 aircraft going from initial production prime colors to actual colors (and in some cases what amounts to low observability schemes).

Makes me wonder just how many they have out there as they do this. I have to believe we have seen at least four new aircraft, maybe twice that...in this sudden deluge.

This is what the yellow one looks like:

I think the differences are pretty clear. If you're not sure about color differences, just look at the PLAAF insignia.
By looking at the upper edge of the DSI, I agree that this one is yellow, but I still could not figure out how yellow changed to greenish gray as this photo clearly show.

Anyway, the color of the paint was not your question, the question was about the IRST being real or not. For that, I hold my belief. Besides Dino's answer, here is the detailed crop from the yellow one this time. It is crystal clear. You can see the optical window of IRST being semi-transparent or reflective instead of being opaque.

The aircraft probably still lacks a gun. However if current AAMs can hit a target less than 500 meters away, maybe it doesn't need an air cannon.
