Me too ... and as such on the bottom ! ... why on top, it would make maintenance much more difficult.

Whether access from the top or bottom are more difficult depends on the ground clearance on the bottom of the aircraft, how often servicing has to be done at the access point, As well as other considerations such as does the maintenance point get in the way of other nearby service points and made simultaneous work on multiple service points difficult.

It is physically exhausting to have to stoop or bend down while accessing a maintenance point overhead.

In general, Su-27 family is considered well laid out to allow efficient routine servicing between sorties.

IMO not, it became a matter of design and maintenance philosophy since all current (as far as I know and I would be eager to learn more) Russian aircraft (MiG-29, Su-27-family, ...) have their engines equipped with their gear-boxes on top, whereas all Western aircraft have them on the bottom.

As such the Chinese requested especially Saturn and Klimov to redesign their AL-31F and RD-33 with a new Western-style arrangement ...

Talking about dropping something in the engines. Couple years ago, I tried to change the battery of my wife's VW Beattle. I accidentally dropped a wrench while taking the battery out. If you have seen the under the hood of a modern Bug, you will know that it's extremely crowded. And I spent hours but simply could not find that wrench. I think it is still in there somewhere to this day...

Yep, same here, while working on my 69 Z-28, I dropped a 9/16 socket and it bounced off one part, and into a hole in the front sub-frame, and then promptly rolled into the center with no access holes, there it stayed, and I had to buy a new 9/16 socket??? BWwwwaaaa!

Would it be safe to say that with the 21xx series, J20 has officially entered the serial production phase. We are now seeing the first few serial produced assets.
