So hongjian posted this over on cdf.

Study of two naval J-20 proposals with stealthy nozzles, folding wings, stealthy weapon pods and FSW because why the hell not?? lol

I mean, huitong did mention CAC was pursuing a naval based J-20... And part of me wishes they go with the forward swept wing version just to give the middle finger to every other naval fighter in service or due to go in service around the world.

The presence of stealthy 2d nozzles is also interesting, I wonder if this is merely artistic license or something all production J-20s will feature. Weapon pods, folding wings are kinda to be expected.

You can tell that's nothing but fan-arts from the text. In no serious technical paper will you find the term "兄弟".

My prediction Bossman, is that 2003 will roll out very shortly, I'm hoping with some type of upgraded powerplant, am I correct in believing that 2001 and 2002 are back at Chengdu?, I believe engines will be replaced in 2002. Player? Player? Ferris Player?, sorry chief, I just watched Ferris Buehler with the girls when we all had a snow day on Friday. Player always has some J-20 news, what about it bro?, Eng? AirSuperiority?

As a more powerful engine, the WS-15 will require more airflow. The air inlets on the current prototypes are sized for Al-31, so there is no way for these two aircraft to have their engines replaced with WS-15.

I don't know about that, many aircraft have had engine upgrades throughout their lives which resulted in big increases in dry and wet thrust without needing new intakes. Even if you exclude the variable intake types, there are still past examples like the F16 with a fixed inlet which had had big increases in engine thrust without needing a brand new intake. And the F16 was not designed from the ground up with a planned engine upgrade from the start.

With the J20 always intended to use much more powerful WS15s, it stands to reason that the intakes were designed and optimised for those engines, and that they would be willing to settle for some performance penalties using underpowered AL31/WS10As in the meantime as an interim stop gap measure.
