Quickie

Colonel
The building with blue roof is actually a hanger, and the front of it (facing us) is open, with what appears to be a canted tail of a J20 sticking out.

It took me a while to realise this. Initially I thought the building has a solid wall with windows facing us, but a little more observation made me realise that what we are seeing is actually inside the hanger, and the windows looked bright because of the day light coming in from the other side; and a J20 is clearly parked inside.

Yes, after a while I figured the J-20 is probably inside the hangar with the windows behind it. But that still doesn't explain why the rest of the plane outline can't be seen. It could be covered by a canvas or something, but in a hangar?

Thank you. Just a technical remark. In the table at the end of the AW&ST article there is an item "min. thrust (lb.)", and rather incredible values. I suppose they mean thrust without afterburner or reheat, what was earlier called dry thrust, a term hailing from the time a mixure of water and methanol was injected in the compressor of turbine engines to increase thrust or power and indeed also in the supercharger(s) of piston engines.

Or, it could just be because of the poor resolution. It has about as much resolution as an impressionist painting.

We can barely mark the shape of the tail to begin with due to a difference in contrast caused by it sticking out in the day light. Nothing can be seen inside the hanger.

The picture looks really hazy, and the picture itself has low dynamic range. If you look VERY closely you can make out the other tail, but for the most part that combination of factors blends the plane in.

Not to mention they like to screw with the watermark placement. Sometimes I think they use the watermarks as a hint of where to look for in a pic. :D

What series III ?

I do believe at some point, the next year or two, we will likely see the J-20 with the 117S, I doubt it will have OVT, but it could have, but at this stage, what the J-20 needs is the engine that will allow her to supercruise, with all that's going on for the Russians, with the sanctions over the Ukraine, I believe selling the Chinese the F-117s will make sense to everybody, and generate some cash for the PAK-FA.

Maybe 2013 flying.

If These images are confirmed from Chengdu and taken today, then I would say it's highly likely ! ... if not '2011' or '2012' has returned back home.
