I suppose ATD-X being a subfighter sized demonstrator invalidated it... Or maybe they just wanted to snub the Japanese :/

In any case I wish we get some photos of J-20 taken from a camera in the air. I wonder if the writer knows the J-20 picture is a CG

No mention of the Japanese ATD-X effort which is scheduled to make a first flight in 2014, seven years ahead of the projected Korean effort..

Korean effort is explicitly a combat aircraft. Japanese ATD-X is only a technology demonstrator, with the possibility of a follow on combat aircraft but not until 2027.

What they did miss is the Indian Medium combat aircraft project, which currently projected to follow roughly the same schedule as the Korean effort, and is also explicitly a combat aircraft.

I would think playing up rather than down any Japanese militaristic efforts would suit Chinese better.

If India's other military projects are anything to judge by, I doubt the MCA would be on schedule as well.

I doubt People's Daily ranked these aircraft based purely on performance because if they did, the J-20 should be ahead of the F-35 followed by the Pak Fa.

.

It is fairly dangerous to estimate institutional performance at one part of learning curve by extrapolating from performance when it was at an earlier, lower part.

How long did it take for the Chinese to hammer out a useable version of the J-8?

It depends on which aspects of the performance. Also not all performance is aerodynamic.

I don't think the planes were even listed in any particular order... And why do we care about what peoples daily thinks anyway, clearly it isn't a government ordained list or anything lol

They go back and forth on this. Sometimes they want to pay it up and other times they want to demean it. Quite like what we do in the states with regards to China.

I think.it fair to use current standard to gauge the project progress of India. Until India demonstrated otherwise.

It's obviously a jab at Japan because realistically South Korea's shouldn't even be included. Both Japan and South Korea only pushed their programs because of the emergence of the J-20. They can't have backward China have something that was when it was the US alone a status symbol of being an advanced country where they thought riding on the US's coattails was enough to be a part of the club to thumb their nose at China. China was never going to have a 5th gen stealth fighter...
