J-18 ???

I honestly would not be surprise if someone somewhere in China is experimenting with VTOL/STOVL type aircraft. That is not to say we'll see a F-35B type plane flying next year! but I think it's only a natural progression that with the amount of resources that has gone into their aviation industry in the past decade something like that would've been totally ignored.
I believe that VTOL type aircraft will ultimately power almost all aircraft in the future. I think that is a safe assumption.
Now whether that happens in my lifetime or not (probably not) remains to be seen but I think that's a forgone conclusion.

I disagree. Look at the power v. speed curve of a helicopter and remember that the helicopter is the most efficient VTOL aircraft, beside airships which can't really substitute for other types of VTOL aircraft. I'm in favor of STOL aircraft. I can imagine a STOVL aircraft using contra-rotating propellers at the tips of a tilting wing and other more or less complex configurations but I don't see them replacing most of the aircraft types of the World.
Beside, if an aircraft can be STOVL at sea level doesn't mean it can operate as well at high altitude airfields as in Tibet and Bolivia.

Whatever is the case, I'd think the PLA had learned not to repeat the same mistakes as the F-35 in trying to make a jack of all trades. The F-35 is the most expensive joke. Ever.:)

Isn't this the Air Force Chief? He seems to be confirming the existence of the J-18.

I watched this last week, yes, he did verbally mentioned J-18. By the way, he is retired admiral turned actice military critic. He was involved in studying RAN aircraft carrier Melbourne when Australia sold it to China for scrap in 1980s.

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean here. Isn't Shenyang's latest stealth fighter called J-31, the 30001! Or do you mean that J-31 is not a formal designation, just being called by military enthusiast?

You are correct, I'm sure there is some sort of internal project number such as Project 310, but at this stage I'm pretty confident there is no official designation for it. It was named out of convenience just like the fictional "Type 730," or the erroneous "WZ10."

I'm actually wondering what J-18 could be used for if it does ever come out. As in, what purpose? Or what China could use it for? Does anyone remember a post very long time ago where someone was mentioning in the future there would be J-15,16,18,19, etc?

There is a very likely possibility that China would employ the use of flat-top aircraft carriers like America does with US marines.

Watch some clips from the youtube... all of them from Chinese media (news programme and analysts) however, all of them have one thing in common... the J-18 was never admitted by the official - unlike the J-20 and the newest stealth project (everyone called J-31). The J-18 is just a rumor first by the Japanese, then the british that claimed that a successful test flight had occurred in inner mongolia.

I think it would be safer if we can wait and see what will happen next.

J18 can operate on special heli-carrier ship...
smaller than CV=faster, less operating/maintain cost with near equal capability.

Hold your horses there partner. Lets just wait and see. I'm not convince yet if the F-35 is a failure or not, beside it's still too early to pass final judgement on it.
