I assume that's why it's not a standard loadout at the moment. Unless air-launch confers significant range advantage over surface-launch, it's not worth it to deprive the carrier group of a capable CAP asset.

I doubt CAP would ever taking a back seat to antishipping but if there were enough J-15s to spare, air launch range + fighter range would give a fairly significant boost to the Y-12's base range.

Yes. I'm also thinking to escort the planes that do carry the YJ-12s --- specifically, the H-6Ks.

Maybe, or maybe not. At least for the YJ-83 IIRC the air-launched range is 250+km while the surface-launched range is ~150km, and that's with a booster.

While this may (possibly) be true for CV-16 and CV-17, with a larger airwing of presumably 48 fighters or so starting with CV-18 and onwards, there will certainly be enough to of them to go around, including fighters performing CAP, antishipping, SEAD, tanking, etc., all at the same time. Just like any current USN airwing that is exactly the same size. Even with a heavily loaded 6kt J-15 that only has a range of 300km (or whatever), that's still that much more range for three Y-12s, and that's per fighter.

Considering the range of the YJ-12's, you don't need to have a lot of plane range before you touch someone. In fact why bother to launch them from planes at all, you might as well launch them all from ships. It would be a lot more cost efficient. The duty of the planes would be to spot for the missiles, and to protect the spotters.

True, but having the capability can be important simply as a tactic to make it mandatory for potential adversaries to plan to counter that capability and in the process allocate resources for that from somewhere else, complicating matters for them.

Without such a capability, adversaries just need to guard against PLAN ships, but with such a capability, anywhere a J-15 can potentially reach via air-refueling is a danger zone, pushing adversaries even further away.

So just getting the information from PB out into forums or a future picture of a J-15 with two or 3 of the missiles could be a significant chess move itself.

Of course when catapults come online and with improved engines it may become official loadouts and not just a chess move.
