- There are "multiple" improved J-15 variants in the pipeline
- The "J-15B" would incorporate an AESA radar and newer types of missiles (both air-to-surface and air-to-air), in addition to internal upgrades (not sure if this implies that J-15A doesn't have any of the above or if the J-15B is another misnomer for J-15A)
- Newer J-15 variants would be powered by the WS-10H
- The PLAN is seeking to build 4-5 carriers in the coming years
- The selection of the next-generation carrier fighter could be made by the end of 2017
- There is a preference for lightweight carrier fighters for small vessels, and heavyweight fighters for large vessels (i.e. both J-20 & FC-31 might be inducted?)

On the 4-5 carrier builds, is the author suggesting they are on top of the two CVs currently under construction?

I expect Liaoning to serve twenty or more years. Plenty of time to decide that flattops are not really worthwhile or to the contrary that more than 5 are necessary.

An carrier-live is 50 years or more. The Chinese will build from now one carrier every three to four years until carriers are obsolete. Eight years between the first and second carrier and then eight years to the forth or twelve years to the fifth carrier means, they are planning sixteen to twenty years into the future.

If carriers are not obsolete in the near future, we will see more then these five Chinese carriers.

I seriously doubt liaoning will have a 50 yr lifespan unless you count right from the start when her keel was laid down in the mid 80s.

I don't see why not unless the PLAN retires the ship early. Much of the ship was brand new and the parts that weren't brand new were never even used.

I think she will be retired early... As in before 2060 (based on roughly a 50 yr span people here say) but that's obviously just my own personal gut feeling.

For all I know she could be like Battleship Yamato powered by captured alien drive technology then.
