Janes talks specifically about the design, particularly the forward portion, as being clear evidence that the PLAN was redesigning the J-15 for carrier CATOBAR operations.

Yes... and they picture the both refer to (the same one which you posted in #1501 on this page), is merely a mock up, not a real aircraft.

And that is assuming the mock up with the "launch bar" on the nosegear is actually meant to represent a launch bar to begin with, and not merely a tow bar for towing the overall mock up instead.


So like I said, 2014 only showed up with the supposed mock up, and we only saw real pictures of the actual aircraft in early July this year, of a small picture showing the J-15A's nose gear, and it is only the latest pictures from yesterday which show the real aircraft in its entirety.

I personally believe it is in fact a launch bar, and believe that what we are seeing now pretty much proves it. I thought that was an actual aircraft back then...perhaps it was just a mock up. But they sure have a flying model now!

It has other hard points where it is conected to the airframe. The airframes inner structure may be changed, too.

Indeed ... the gear looks very much different.

By the way I have two more questions that were spinning thru my mind since some time:

1. Does anyone know the current status of the twin-seater ? So far we have seen one, maybe two prototypes and one - most likely of them - in grey at the CFTE ... final news were from September last year.

2. Again a J-15 prototype 557 was mentioned ... but I have never seen one !?? Did I miss this particular bird?

The J-15A would be the PLAN's first asset that could remotely match the Super Hornet in terms of electronics and possibly kinematics.

About 20 years late, although the PLAN was never that much of a priority anyways.

I'm assuming you mean carrier based aircraft; because if we include land based aircraft, I'd argue J-10AH and J-11BH are quite kinematically competitive.
Even J-15 could be kinematically competitive, though obviously Block II Superhornet with its AESA radar has quite a margin of superiority in mission avionics over all the aforementioned aircraft.


And let's not be too cavalier -- "about 20 years late" is pretty ridiculous to say, considering the overall state of the Chinese military progression and the Chinese economy and domestic industry from where it was 20 years ago, and it implies that 20 years ago China should have been able to match the US military in technology and capability...

Well, the Super Hornet first flew in 1995 and went into service in 1999...so it is not quite 20 years.

To be fair, I believe the poster simply meant that it is 20 years later. Which it is more like 18 years since introduction...but 18 years later. I do not think he meant that the Chinese in anyway bided their time, or had serious problems making it happen in terms of their capability once they had the finances and were in a position to.

The fact is, back in the late 1990s, they simply were not in a position to do so even if they wanted to at that moment.

They had to go through all they have goine through to get here.

And I have to say...it is pretty amazing that they have gotten as far as they have in the amount of time they have spent at it.

Especially when we see with a year (or two at the outside...but I really expect it next year) a CATOBAR carrier being built to house the CAT capable J-15 they are already testing.

Anyhow...that's my read.
