Yes, we all know that the Navy will be having CATOBAR carriers sooner or later. And rumours of a catapult compatible J-15 have been flying around for a few years now, so this J-15 variant is not unexpected.

What will be important to see, is whether this J-15 in the picture is a prototype for a newly overhauled J-15, such as a J-15 variant improved avionics (AESA radar, etc) and so on, or if it is merely a one off standard J-15 meant for catapult testing.

In any case. Catapult facilities on land we observed for some time, there was evidence of planned catapults on aircraft carriers, it lacked only the aircraft.

EMALS over steam if they've already locked down the design of Type 002 and it includes cats. EMALS is more modular and less structurally embedded, which means they don't need to finalize the EMALS design before freezing the design of the CV, unlike with steam cats.

To me IEPS is bigger change than switching CATs. If these two have to go together, even less chance of seeing EMALS on 002.

An early J-15 prototype used WS-10, but later switched to Al-31.

Huitong is saying that the catapult capable J-15 may be powered by WS-10s, but we have no pictures.
