Hm, such a small pod, if it ends up being a real thing, has its pros and cons.
It can't match the versatility of a larger recon pod, nor can it offer the same capability. For example surveying as wide swath of land at once.
On the other hand, its shape and size suggests it's usable even during supersonic flight. So it's probably usable from high altitudes (over 15 km) and possibly at speeds of over Mach 1.5.
It could be that the name of the game is numbers. How to have as many quick reaction/high speed/high altitude recon assets as possible, for quick tactical recon missions, requested on a short notice or against fairly dangerous areas.
In such environments, having a recon asset being a high flying supersonic asset might be an advantage over the more numerous slow low to medium class UAVs. High class drones such as the WZ-7 might also offer high altitude coupled with a lot of safety (greater stand off range due to more potent recon equipment) but those might be fairly low in numbers overall. Plus they might not always be able to react as quickly, even if available.
These kind of platforms like the J10 might also be ok for target damage assessment. Flying alongside a strike force which uses medium range stand off weapons. In theory, it a 100 km or so recon range might be achieved, with enough resolution to see if a particular building was struck with a weapon.
Still, it seems quite beneficial that the pod is detachable and usable on regular J10Cs. Not being an integral part of a specialized J10 recon variant.
