Hey fellows does anyone have a clear cut explanation of the differences between the early batch J-10 and J-10a. I know early J-10 could not use PL-12 and some of them had a different forward landing gear doors but anything else?

Thank you! You don’t know how much I appreciate this! There are 3 batches of upgrades between J-10 and J-10A:
Upgrade 1: integration with PL-12, laser-guided bomb and HMS.
Upgrade 2: enhanced ECM and new communication antenna.
Upgrade 3: upgraded radar, integration with targeting pod and new datalink.
From this article if you can read Chinese:
What is the payload of that dorsal spine ?? Quite strange that we see that type only on the acrobatic team. Beside fuel, not a lot of payload is relevant if they use that version only for aerobatic display. And doing a variant only for show is even stranger.Another image of a J-10CY from the PLAAF's "Ba Yi" aerobatics team ... this time no. 04!

Interestingly it seems that this paticular jet has all the combat subsystems still in it: MAWS, datalink antennas, IFF, the works. Is this (using basically combat-spec jets painted with a special livery) the norm for Ba Yi?Another image of a J-10CY from the PLAAF's "Ba Yi" aerobatics team ... this time no. 04!
